Tell me about the v8 petrol

I'm in the market for a v8 diesel, but today I changed my thinking slightly, to a v8 petrol

Question is what is the real world mpg, I have a m3 right now, so sort of used to petrol bills!

Any info is appreciated, model changes, trim levels, problems etc

Thanks in advance

Allen

Double your fuel bills. And that's just for the diesel. Lol.

What year or budget you thinking of ?

V8 Petrol

You don't mention whether it is the 4.4 NA V8 or 4.2 Supercharged V8.

I have compared my 2010TDV8 Sport with V8 Discovery 3 (4.4l)/4 (5l) over an extended duration and the difference on any given trip is only about 1l/100km.

My TDV8 regularly gets around 13-14l/100km and the petrol Discoveries about 14l/100km.

I have a 2005 Supercharged - does about 17mpg but I tend to be light on the gas. I expect if I drove in traffic, 13mpg would be probably about right. 21mpg on long motorway runs, again driving in a fuel efficient way. By comparison my M4 does about 23/24mpg but I probably drive it a little harder. I used to have a TDV8 a few years ago - can't recall what that was but think it was more like 25mpg. Rationale for buying a Supercharged (apart from all the obvious) was that they were much cheaper than the diesel together with relatively low mileage. 2005 RRS First Edition Supercharged

Normally Aspirated RRS 2010 Onwards Specifications

Attached are specs showing the normally aspirated 5l V8 RRS for the 2010 onwards models.

I was under the impression especially in the early years that the UK got the 4.4l V8 Petrol.

I forgot to mention of particular note.
The NA V8 is the lightest model in the range by quite some margin, has the same front brakes as the SC V8 and has significantly better performance than the TDV8. And on a hot day (not often a problem in the UK) you don't loose the performance of the TDV8.

Yeah we did get the 4.4, certainly on the early models.

Not many were purchased, so not many available second hand.

May as well get the SC

It honestly depends how you drive it. Around town I average 15mpg, cruising at 80mph I average 22mpg.

With the windows up you can't really hear the v8, if you clog it then you can hear the charger and the engine roar. Wind the window down and you can appreciate what the folks behind you hear. The exhaust can be easily modded to remove the centre muffler, this will add quite a lot of throat to the engine note (I've not done it yet, still waiting for a slot to open up at my local garage).

The sport you're looking at will need a couple of things before you buy it, first is the wheels will need reconditioning. Theres quite a good amount of kerb rash on ones fitted (be aware that the stock SC alloys kerb for fun!), with the kerbing being only on the front wheels the previous owner obviously parks nose first mounting the kerb, this means that it will no doubt need the tracking done.
Standard on all rovers with ACE they eat say bar bushes, take the car out and throw the car into a few corners/roundabouts. If you hear any clunking/bangs then they will need changing.
The early SC had the AUX pump wired in backwards (from the factory) get them to check and show you confirmation that it has been rewired. While not a big or expensive job to do yourself, the pump is £100.

Also worth mentioning is that it is showing a range of 89 miles with half a tank of petrol.. mine generally has a range of 150 miles when on half a tank.

Real world in my experience ...

13.5MPG Urban if I really, really tread lightly
11-12MPG if I like to hear the engine a bit Very Happy
19-20MPG on English motorway, averaging 75-80
21MPG on French motorway doing 90 (This I can't understand, but put it down to less traffic and therefore slow down / speed up situations).
17-18MPG using Cruise Control - again, this is becasue the CC cannot predict other peoples car movements like we as humans can, and it slows too too hard and picks up too hard when the road is clear. 2006 Range Rover Sport 4.2 s/c with Arden bodykit
