'Variable Effort Steering' - HEAVY STEERING!

I have just bought a 2013 RRS. On test driving it I just thought it was fairly heavy steering due to the large tyres, but I've had it scanned for a fault at my local garage & its coming up 'Variable Effort Steering'....the guy in the garage is clueless about it, before I take it into the dealership, (££££££!!!) does anyone know anything about this and how much it is likely to fix it? Steering is really heavy & also steering column control switch isn't working either! Thanks

could be the lower steering ball joint, mine went really heavy, and it is a known fault, the knuckle siezes up, its around £100 plus fitting for a new one 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

The steering is speed sensitive so the error could be related to that. The steering control is part of the air suspension control module which is located on the A pillar behind the steering wheel. Would be worth checking that there are no loose connections to the module. It's easy enough to access.

Most likely is that the PAS pump is on its way out... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
