Mine used to retract when the ignition was switched off, no matter what gear i was in. Found out by accident once. Shocked It also defaults to P.

Mine definitely defaults to park when ignition is switched off and retracts down no matter what gear you are in Rob. Sounds like something is amiss with yours. By all means try the operation of mine on Sunday to see what it should do if you haven't sorted it by then Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Im a little confused - I lower mine whilst in N then sometimes forget & switch off via the button. The Sport then alerts me the vehicle is not in Park & I have to turn the dial to P which then cancels all alerts & lowers the dial. Rolling Eyes 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

I used to lower mine while on approach to my garage. I never did adjust the height while stationary. I was told by my dealer, it is better for the suspension components to do it while coasting.

As per lrtopix

Rotary selector P should normally be selected before switching off the engine. If any other gear is selected at turn off, the selector will move to P before retracting into the centre console. If the engine is switched off with N selected, the system will wait for 10 minutes before selecting P. This time delay allows the vehicle enough time to be conveyed through a car wash Laughing

Ady - I do a bit of both - lowering on approach - or in situ but i like to show off sometimes & lower it if its being admired Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Yawn 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............
