Only if the coolant does not pass its specific gravity test - (it only needs changing every 10 years). 07MY RRS TDV6

I really do hope they are not going to do a Engine Flush with Coolant, the cooling system perhaps.

Engine flushes are just a money making scam for garages to rip off naive customers. You will not find a qualified mechanical engineer who thinks they are a good idea. The flush products are just a strong detergent - some will remain in the engine after use - detracting from the lubricating properties of the fresh oil. The products are claimed to mobilise and remove oil sludge. If you are that worried about oil sludge then do two oil changes in fairly rapid succession but in a well maintained engine there should only be minimal sludge formation anyway and this will be removed along with the old oil at a scheduled service. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE |

Yes - just to clarify they are recommending an OIL system flush. Thanks for comments so far - pretty much as expected but wanted to be sure |

I'm used to petrol cars, where you change the oil and it's either golden yellow or clear afterwards.

Its a diesel - they are dirty sooty things - all normal - in normal use just change the oil at the right time with the right spec. Change more often if used in arduous conditions (towing, constant city bumper to bumper traffic).

^^ This. If you really want it, buy a bottle of stuff for under a tenner to pour in your oil, run it for half a day before you put it in the garage. As others have said, it is normal for oil in diesel engines to go black quickly, and cars that have had oil changes at reasonable intervals wont really need anything extra. Its just an easy few quid for the garage: Bung some stuff in to idle for a while that costs them under a tenner (often free off reps). And charge you £25. Its an easy drink for them to flush an extra 25 sovs out of the dazed and confused who think there is some dark art going on during servicing. In a diesel the lovely golden oil you pour in will be black within the first 100miles of use. It's not a problem. |

Waste of time and money, an in some older vehicles an engine flush can actually create problems. |

That's assuming they ask the customer first. I've seen it on the work sheet after picking the car up from the dealership. Only ever been at main dealers though. Never seen it mentioned at an indie. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |
