You would wonder how they do - its automatic, so not driver caused surely. It scares me the though of mine breaking, how does it happen and are there steps to prevent it?

I watched a guy who works on LR gears and he mentions changing transmission fluid before 100k, mines 100k and I'd wonder if I should or not.

Good man, I'll get that checked and done. Its had full LR history and a few bits over the years done - I'm keen to keep it in good order and follow on with LR even though they can be questionable in service.

The oil starts degrading at 60k-ish miles

Yea that is what I'd seen in the video, so is this part of the servicing at LR?
Also I kept a copy of this fine info from Paddi but it says every 10 years or 150k:

Every 2 years or 30,000 miles: Replace fuel filter.
Every 3 years or 45,000 miles: Replace brake fluid.
Every 3 years or 45,000 miles: Replace the air cleaner element.
Every 5 years or 75,000 miles: Replace transfer case oil.
Every 6 years or 90,000 miles: Replace all flexible brake hoses.
Every 7 years or 105,000 miles: Replace the ancillary drive belt.
Every 7 years or 105,000 miles: Replace camshaft timing belt and high pressure fuel pump driving belt. (n.b. TDV6 only; the TDV8 camshafts are chain driven).
Every 10 years or 150,000 miles: Replace the engine coolant.
Every 10 years or 150,000 miles: Renew automatic transmission fluid.
Every 10 years or 150,000 miles: Renew front and rear differential oil. (5 years if rear diff is ‘active’ type).

ZF, who manufacture the gearbox, state that the oil should be changed at 75k miles.

Land Rover, in their infinite wisdom, say 150k/10 years. For 99.9% of D3/D4/FFRR/RRS, they will not cover anywhere near this mileage within the first 3 years of it's life, so when the gearbox gives issues, it is way outside of the warranty period.

And not LR's problem, leaving the customer to pick up the bill for a gearbox repair Rolling Eyes

well after months of messing about, my gearbox is going in for repair, it all started 6 months ago when on the motorway, if you used kickedown, the car would display limited gears available and go into limp mode. However if you never used 5/6th gear, then the motor was fine, however ive now had enough so its going in to be fixed, Ive been told around £1600 will get the box reconditioned.
I had my oil changed, though that was around 100,000 miles, hopeing that would cure it, infact it made it worse as it kepted dropping gears in 4th as well 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

Thats for the gearbox repair, as its a known fault with these zf boxes, the overall bill will be a lot more when labour and vat are added 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

no idea why I never got a notification for this post, I guess yours is fixed now?
£2000 all in, everything now works again, but it just isnt the same, it doesnt feel the same!!!!
It drives better and the mpg has gone up from 19 mpg to 24 round town and up from 22 mpg to 28 on the motorway, however sometimes it sets off too quickly, other times its sluggish? 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))
