Over the last few days a banging noise has started from the rear. I think it's from the left side.

It's not one of the exhausts is it? One of mine was banging against the metal counterweight thingy |

could be your balance block coming loose, its a big old lump of iron which hangs underneath the car 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater ))) |

Would I be able to feel that as the wheels rotate?

Please don't take this as an insult to your intelligence, but have you checked the wheel nuts? Easy to gloss over if you think they haven't been off recently, but for instance, IIRC, someone recently had someone try to pinch their wheels; they didn't get the job finished, but thus the nuts were left loose. If it is the hand brake, it is not that an expensive fix, I had both my rear discs, and hand brake drum brakes replaced for less than £200 at my local indie 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater ))) |

Could it be the handbrake cable rubbing against the inside of the wheel, perhaps catching a balance weight |

The sensation is like I'm driving over something with the bang, almost like a buckled wheel feel.

Worn spline on the axle? I had something similar happening when the diff on my 330xd went bust due to a worn spline. Regards etc.,
