England 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Tonga Green
Banging from rear wheels at low speeds

Over the last few days a banging noise has started from the rear. I think it's from the left side.

It's only when the car is moving under 10mph. I can physically feel the "bang," and it feels like the wheel is catching on something. That's the best I can describe it.

Anyone any suggestions?

It's not one of the exhausts is it? One of mine was banging against the metal counterweight thingy

Bearing in mind it is an older vehicle (like mine) I wonder if it could be the handbrake shoe lining material that has become detached from the shoe and is rattling around in there. Have been a few reports of that happening. Easy enough to strip it down and have a look. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

It's quite a loud bang.

The only way I can describe it is it sounds like I'm driving over a brick, repeatedly. The bangs sound like something going round on the wheel?!?

Got it in the garage as its service & MOT time anyway, but it's baffling me as to what it could be?? 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Would I be able to feel that as the wheels rotate?

It feels brake orientated as I can feel something through the pedal.

Whatever it is it won't be cheap, that's for sure! 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Please don't take this as an insult to your intelligence, but have you checked the wheel nuts? Easy to gloss over if you think they haven't been off recently, but for instance, IIRC, someone recently had someone try to pinch their wheels; they didn't get the job finished, but thus the nuts were left loose. If it is the hand brake, it is not that an expensive fix, I had both my rear discs, and hand brake drum brakes replaced for less than £200 at my local indie 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

Just checked, nuts are still there!!!

When I put the handbrake on parking up it made a similar noise to the banging I'm experiencing. I know one of the rear calipers was seized (just purchased a replacement), so it could all be tied in with that (although the seized caliper is the opposite side to the noise).

I'm sure i'l find out 2mora! 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Could it be the handbrake cable rubbing against the inside of the wheel, perhaps catching a balance weight Question

The sensation is like I'm driving over something with the bang, almost like a buckled wheel feel.

Nothing over 15+ mph though 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Worn spline on the axle? I had something similar happening when the diff on my 330xd went bust due to a worn spline. Regards etc.,

Banging not resolved. Drove the daughter to school and its still there.

Sounds like passenger side rear. Can hear a circular "rubbing" noise and the a "bang" noise.

Baffled by it... 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)
