You're unlocking the car first before trying the tailgate button? i.e. Unlocking the driver and passenger doors first? Naturally, this has to be done, or any TDH could have access to your boot

Mine opens with the button even if the car is locked, as long as I have the key with me. |

Yep, you see I've got an old RRS not blessed with keyless entry. Should have worked a little bit harder in my youth |

I guessed it was a key-less thing - like 'gesture tailgate' (when it works!), it wouldn't be much good if you had to unlock the car first I suppose! |

Mine used to do that occasionally, fitted new switch to tailgate and now work works fine, funnily enough it only seemed to do it in hot weather. I am assuming you have the one piece tailgate being a 2012 car, if you fit a new switch I would suggest you get one of the kit's to mod it to close off the fob as well if the forum member still makes them up, it works brilliantly.
