I have a remote for the heater but never used it other than to see what it did - green light on remote, rumbling from car...

It will either fail to start remote heating or turn it off prematurely (i.e. before reaching the full 20/30 mins that it stays on for) if the battery is low. Never lets the battery drain enough to cause problems like failure to start etc. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Having said the above, it is worth getting a smart charger to keep the battery topped up during winter. Even if it is only to ensure that these remote and timed heating features are available whenever you need them.
