LED main

We have the white light of the zeon dipped beam, but the yellow H7 main. I would like to change the main to LED? Reading on other forums they say LED's don't work so well. Has anybody on here had any experience and what make did you go for ? 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

Not RRS related, I have just had the stage coach one candle powered Halogens on my Defender replaced with a set of full on LED sealed unit headlights that are guaranteed waterproof, CE compliant etc etc. The difference driving at night compared to before is, well there is no comparison, like night and day!! The other advantange is that their power consumption is a lot less so hopefully no more problems with headlight wiring on a 20 year old vehicle 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My electrical knowledge extended to continually changing the dipped beam lamp that blew every time we had damp weather...... the local Indy (Lix Toll Land Rovers) suggested I try them as a "fix" for the lamp blowing episodes every winter. Linked into the light problem was that when the offside dipped beam blew I also lost the horn! Now I have dipped beam, horn and great range on the headlights........... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

The issue of with LED as a replacement for standard bulbs is the positioning of the light source. The reflector and lens are designed for a point source (the small hot bit in the bulb). LEDs tend to produce light from a large number of points spread over a large area. The result is that the light doesn't hit the reflector at the correct angles and so isn't directed forwards from the unit correctly. The Defender replacement units will have been designed from the start to use large LEDs. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

As RRSTDV8 has pointed out, an LED retro fit would require light to be emmited from the exact spot as the halogen filament. Aside from this, LED are not such a precise light source and this makes them much harder to focus from the start. This is why an LED spot/pencil beam just can't deliver.

The other thing I would point out, is that the colour spectrum of light produced by LEDs (and HID too) is far inferior to that of a halogen bulb. This means that colour rendering is much poorer, and objects don't stand out as well. Unfortunately, this "flattening" effect is often perceived as a brigher beam to the user, whereas contrast is actually lost.

Furthermore, LEDs produce the greatest light output at 6000k - the human eye is not only much better able to process light at lower kelvin ratings, but additionally, the shorter wavelength increases refracted light in poor weather conditions, further reducing visibility.

In short, my recommendation is to stick with halogen, and I hope this post might make you feel more happy to do so - I know it's very tempting to stick LEDs or HID kits in everything! I'm actually planning on fitting yellow bulbs to my high beam, since the HID beam produces most of the light anyway and the colour would be more beneficial. As I have said recently over on Defender2, halogen is actually the best light source in terms of visibility, but in the real world, the extra space and power to have more haloen beams is just not available and this is where other sources are beneficial.

I have found Osram Nightbreakers to be the "whitest" bulb with decent output

I use the Nightbreakers in my H7 units too. They are a very similar colour to the HID bulbs. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
