Battery or Alternator

I was away with work last week when my wife rang to say the car was dead! She couldn't start it. Its a 2007 TDV6 RRS. She called Green Flag out who jump started it and told her the Alternator was Censored . He also said that if she didn't follow their advice they wouldn't come out to it again without charging her! So when I got home I put it on charge and checked the cells, they were bone dry. So I topped them up and left it to charge for half a day before trying it. When I started the car I checked the voltage across the battery and got readings of between 14.2V-14.5V. 2 days later the car went flat again so I jumped it off my pick-up and went to our local Varta Battery Wholesaler who tested the battery and said it was fine and that dry cells normally indicates a problem with the charging system. He advised me to charge the battery for a couple of days, so I put it on charge Sat Afternoon and left till last night. It seems ok but not sure how long it will last!

So, anyone any ideas or experience to determine if its the Battery, Alternator or Regulator? 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE- Cairns Blue with 22" Stormers

Would be inclined to say alternator, sounds like it's overcharging and has boiled the battery.. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

Thanks Guys, looks like I'll be replacing the Alternator. Is it an easy DIY job? 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE- Cairns Blue with 22" Stormers

Hi there. Readings of about 14.2v - 14.5v when the car is running should be fine and not overcharging the battery as your alternator is supposed to output around 13.8v to 14.2v. Anything over 15v would be considered too high and may well lead to overcharging.

Id recon its more likely the battery, a bad earth or something else causing mthe battery to drain. Maybe best check out the earths from the battery first to ensure good continuity. Would be good if you could borrow a battery.

What kind of battery and capacity is it? I had similar issues before and was caused by a cheap battery being fitted previously by the last owner. Fitted a good quality yuasa battery with correct ratings and all has been good since.

Oh also maybe worth checking that the battery connections are good and tight as the landrover battery terminal connectors arent great and often become loose.

Good luck

Actually, in this case, up to 15.2/15.3 can be seen normally, according to temperature and battery state etc. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

The battery is an OEM Land Rover one. Not sure if its the original or has been replaced at some point. My initial thoughts were battery over alternator due to the readings across the engine at idle. I haven't tried to take a reading at revs yet, it could be peaking high and cooking it. When I checked after a day or twos use it the fluid levels were still ok. 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE- Cairns Blue with 22" Stormers

Take it somewhere that can check the system properly. My (second) alternator died recently. Battery was flat as you like but once jumped it was showing 13.5V on a meter across the terminals with the engine running. When I took it to the indie I use, he plugged in the diagnostic and it showed that the voltages were actually all over the place (as low as 12V and as high as 14.7V) and the alternator was jiggered. It seems the charging system is not straight forward. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Well, took it to my local Indy and they diagnosed it as the battery. New battery fitted, can't wait for it to be the alternator!!! 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE- Cairns Blue with 22" Stormers

Well new battery seems to have done wonders for the car, the suspension seems to be behaving itself, there seems to be better performance all round. Amazing! 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE- Cairns Blue with 22" Stormers

Hi - just curious to know if your new battery still is doing the job and if you have had anymore trouble lately?
