To Re-Map or not Re-Map that was the question......

And the answer is.........

So, my Discovery 3, 2.7TDv6, I have owned since newly registered in March 2007. So I know everything that has been changed or modified on it.
I’ve always been of the opinion that the engine is more than sufficient for the work that I ask it to do! I’m now on 174,000 miles (278,000 kms) and since the wife bought a caravan, I’ve been noticing that it can on occasion struggle to keep going up hills.

As part of the numerous updates that I offer, I have often been asked if I do D3/RRS remaps. So, in my quest for solutions, I decided that I would get a remap myself. Now my Discovery is the 2007 model which has the EuIV engine, so the EGR valves have not been able to be blanked.

I’ve discussed potential re-maps with a number of suppliers and in the end, I decided to go with Bell Auto Services. I’ve been so impressed with them that I’ll now be able to apply BAS re-maps as part of my other services. But this thread really is about the difference I’ve noticed on the before/after remap process.

So I’ve had a few threads trying to work out why some of my live engine values go flat instead of peaking the same as the other values. Compared against others, whose live values are definitely peak with no flat.
Having compared with the remap on and off, my live values are peaking where they should be and the hesitation that I seemed to get from time to time has disappeared.
I also wanted to blank off my EGR valves, which I have done on many other peoples Discovery’s/RRS but never on my own (see EuIV issue above). A simple blanking and removal of the butterfly along with the remap and my Permagrin is beginning to be restored. The big test will be when I next get the Caravan on the back, but based on what I’ve experienced so far, it’s not going to disappoint!

So now I have an EuIV engine, blanked EGR valves and a remap. The thing I’ve noticed over the last couple of days, is that if I floor it, I have to ease off the throttle as the pick up is soooo much stronger than it has ever been and the rush to 50 is just phenomenal!
The power has increased by 38bhp and 88Nm of Torque which will be in use as we drag the tintent across Germany and into the heights of Austria in the summer!
The thing is, you can still pootle around as I’ve done for some time, but when you call for the loud peddle to do it’s stuff, it certainly does it with hardly a hesitation.
You can really tell the difference when trying to overtake, there is no longer a feeling of ‘trying’ to overtake, it just does!
It seems to me to be most noticeable at the 30-50 range and impressively continues to push on in the 50-90ish where I have to let go and remember that I got this for towing power not boy racer (although it seems to be more than adequate at both when asked!!! Wink

So, to everyone who has asked me in the past about a remap, I’m sorry! it really does appear to have transformed the beast and I wish I had this done years ago!
For the fuel economist in me, I’ve managed slightly more miles on ¼ tank when driving carefully than before, but time will tell on the longer term effects. But if (as expected) I see no overall increase/decrease (except where I know I’ve been driving ‘spriritedly!) in MPG then I’ll be a very happy bunny. But I’m also happy to take a slight hit to get this extra power.

The beast lives on, long live the beast! Bodsys Brake Bible

I've not had the RRS done yet (I've only just acquired it) but I did have a full power remap done on the Jag XF (same engine) and would agree wholeheartedly with the OP. Transforms the car completely especially in the 30-50 range. Worth every penny

I'd be interested in how the MPG works out on a brim to brim on your regular normal driving. Current - 2020 Range Rover Sport P400e
Gone - 2014 Range Rover Sport HSE SDV6
Gone - 2017 Audi A8 Sport
Gone - 2007 Range Rover Sport HSE TDV8 - Great car.

Brim to brim mpg I always measure. The first tank won't be a true reflection of my normal driving whilst I've been errrr testing the increase Whistle But the following one will be. My last tank ful before the update was 21mpg. Average over three months is 22mpg. Average over the year is 22mpg.
I do have a winch/snorkel/tree sliders/chunky tyres etc and often carry a load of stuff in the boot so it's not too surprising. I did manage 27mpg on one trip last month driving like miss daisy. Bodsys Brake Bible

Stu, yes, towing electrics need to be enabled. Different setting depending on if you are using 7pin or 13 pin electrics. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

Thought this was only possible if the ecu was mapped on the bench ? Are there plans for the 3.0 TDV6 to be remapped through the diagnostics port Thumbs Up

Not sure if the MSV2 will be able to, but other tools are constantly being developed. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

The MSv is fully supportive of Petes remaps.. I have had one on my car for three years now.. I did some testing with Pete the other week and had to remove my map.. what a different car without it.. as soon as I had finished the testing my remap was back on pronto.

I have driven other D3's that have been remapped by another soruce, but none of them seem as smooth and as subtle as Pete's.
I even drove one and told the guy the best thing to make his car more drivable was to get a remap, he said it was already mapped Shocked .

Ian you will notice a great better performance when towing the tin tent, just put it in cruise and it will stay there all day..

Flack Thumbs Up

Yeah, should have been clearer. 2010 needs bench update, msv2 has been able to do older Rrs and d3 for ages. Bodsys Brake Bible
