Dash cam recommendation

Well after some Censored keyed the side of my 2014 BMW 5 series earlier on today Censored I have decided to get a dashcam fitted to both of my vehicles.

Does anyone have any recommendations? It Must have the ability to record even when parked up

I have a Blackvue 500 (which is a couple of models too old now). I have hardwired it with PowerMagic so it records when parked without completely draining the battery. Switches off after a configured number of days or when configured voltage threshold is reached. HD quality video, WIFI to connect to smartphone app for live view, file transfer and configuration. Built-in GPS to associate video with location.

I understand newer models come with 2 cameras so you can cover both front and rear.

Haven't used anything else to compare though. However, dashcams have been discussed at length on the forum - happy searching. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

I have the Blackvue and find it OK.
It is small (by comparison) so discreet. Image is good and the viewing software excellent and easy to use. Essential for me.
WiFi link to iPhone makes life easy.
Down side is the apparent need to frequently re-format the SD card.
Now had it for 3 years without fault.

I've just bought a K1S and am in the process of fitting it.

Front & Rear cameras linking to a central controller with a screen. Also capable of connecting to a GVIF or SatNav screen. It has an internal battery offering 40 mins of "parking" cover but if you hooked the device up to a contstant feed, would record all the time obviously.

Beauty of this one is that the controller can be concealed and the cams are v small so unobtrusive. I've only connected the front one so far (as its easier!) and that has a very wide-angle lense (see still & clip). I intend to use the rear cam for reversing as well, though as I will be using a Fakra connection to my SatNav, it won't be automatically engaging with reverse.

Still from drive home last night down Commercial Road, London. What's good here is the person on the far right is about in line with the front wheel, so if someone walked out on you, the cam would catch it. The time is out, will need to sort that later.

The video certainly seems to be a decent enough quality for an insurance claim or to hand to the police. A dashcam is on my list and this does look to be a "good enough" one. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hi everyone,

@Pufftmw: this looks very impressive. How does the image hold up in very low lighting, like at night or going through tunnels and such?

Reading everybody´s comments it seems these cameras can be lifesavers when something happens. But tell me, when you´re at fault: would you delete the footage or not? Wink

Best,

Welcome to the forum,

Yes dashcams are a very good idea especially for ladies as you are sadly more likely to be targeted by lowlife scum in 'cash for crash' scams.

I can only comment on my camera which is an inexpensive mini 0801 but the image quality is very good in all light conditions as the technology is very smart and the camera adjusts itself as light changes.

If I were at fault in a collision I would admit it so your question about deleting the file doesn't really apply.

Enjoy your Sport. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hi Jill

TBH its a case of fit/forget for me, so I haven't checked nor done much night driving recently! However, I've got it linked to the pretty pants quality SatNav screen and sometimes use it as a rear-view cam. Going through the Blackwall Tunnel it seems perfectly clear for cars coming up behind, despite any headlight glare. The image quality on a PC will be a lot better obviously. If you do a search on the K1S, there's a review HERE which is very in-depth with a video showing front/rear day/night quality.

What I won't do is post on a public forum/youtube the video of me going past a speed camera van with GPS speed showing, together with my registration - they were obviously having a cup of tea at the time as I didn't get a NIP and I wouldn't want to incriminate myself Wink
