customer service and a replacement keyfob

Well today the old key fob gave up the ghost, no luck working any thing, nothing to do but buy a new fob

Straight onto Hunters Land rover in Kings Lynn, yes sir £145 for the fob, then you will need to get the service section to arrange to have the key programmed to the vehicle, is that included asked me, oh no sir, that will be another £45...so £185, all in, seems a little pricey, but its needed, so I have the V5 and all the vehicle details, can I order that as it has a five day lead time.

oh no sir, you will have to come into the dealership, with your driving licence and the V5 , to prove its your vehicle, and pay upfront before, we order the key, its the rules,

so I asked but you will need the car to program the key, if I can pay and supply the vehicle details, then any check could be done when I collect the key, if no driving licence, or there is an issue with anything you don't need to pass the key over.

but no, its the rules sir. we have had people not collecting the key, that's why you need to pay up front,

but I am offering to pay up front, then if I don't collect, you would not be out of pocket, the check can still be done, but after the order has gone in.

"sorry sir those are the rules".

so now I will have to load the kids into the car drive twenty miles on a Sat morning to show all the documents, pay, then wait five working day, which will see the replacement into the following week at what point I can do it all again the following Sat, as I cant get there during the dealers opening hours, this brings the replacement key two weeks and a feeling of being ripped off and hoping I haven't inconvenienced the dealer too much.

have to say I am not impressed with the customer service, the rules while attempting to be safe are not customer friendly, end of rant, glad the car is so nice to drive. it makes up for these little issues. almost

I'm afraid that this is in part because LR have fairly recently been cracking down on such matters with regard to the sale of keys and have sent out orders to the dealers. Rolling Eyes Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

You do know that the most common reason for fobs ceasing to work is that the battery is clapped out and it can be replaced with a new one costing only about £2.50 right?

If you search the site for key fob battery there is a brilliant 'how to" . If you can handle a soldering iron it really is quite easy and represents a considerable saving. Thumbs Up

I do see that Keys would have to be covered by a security system, but If supplied the vin numbers car reg, paid by credit card to the owners name, then I don't see why an order could not be raised. the Key once delivered would still be in the care of the main dealer, and the vehicle would then still have to be presented for verification and to have the car programed to accept the new fob, once the details were confirmed, the key handed over, so no security breach's could occur. I was /am more miffed that this delay will mean it could be into Easter before I get full use of the car again, I find the bureaucratic delay has only resulted in a poor customer service.

Yes I did realise that the failure was the rechargeable battery, I have two bought for that very reason, but even after watching the video, as I prised open the case to get at the transmitter board I knocked of a small surface mount transistor off the board, its the opening and splitting the original case which is the difficult bit, the internal board is quite fragile where as the case is tough, so the force to part the case is extreme when working close to the internal board, quite risk really.

Ironically I tried the board and it still locked the car, so not sure what that component did, I will look into getting it repaired. and the second dead key fob will be much easier as I now know where to cut to remove the internal board without damage. at £185 per fob, its worth investing in a dremel type cutter. you live and learn.

as for the repair, the component has one leg missing, or rather still on the board, but has no identification lettering, so unless I can source another board, decommissioned, non working, with that component still attached, so I can salvage the faulty part the repair will most likely not be possible. has anyone got a damage fob, note that the key blade is not needed.

perhaps some else with a failed battery replacement, or water damaged fob, if so happy to hear from you. I will ask in the wanted section.

OK good to hear the you know about the battery change option. There are many guides on the forums of varying usefulness. The video posted by a particularly ham-fisted nitwit tearing the fob case apart with pliers gets the prize for being the most useless!

Here is a link to a PDF with pictures that I followed and helped me to do the job without damaging anything:

As you say - should be possible to find a board from somewhere probably eBay? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

As you say, you should still have been able to email a copy of your V5 etc.

You certainly wouldn't suffer such issues if you were to buy them from Brad @ Yeovil LR or Dan @ Duckworth. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

well I made the decision not to go and see hunters this morning but to look into getting the damage repaired, the damaged part turns out to be a zenner diode, so 150 of them has cost me nearly £4 with vat, the new battery £2.75 and a replacement aftermarket case £7, I have actually enjoyed the search, and if it works that £170 saving for effectively the same out come. thanks for the advice received guys.

Hi jocky581. Could you elaborate a bit more on how you fixed your damaged key fob. Also where you got your bits from. I've got a similar problem in the fact the fob works but the open and close buttons on the casing are damaged to the extent that they do not exist anymore so you can see the electrical board inside the fob. Definitely interested in saving myself £170 and the pleasure of dealing with LR franchised garage. Anyone out there had the same problem. Thumbs Up

If your fob is working, but just the buttons missing/damaged, you should be able to transplant the innards to an eBay fob (a few quid) by following the guide Paddi linked to, above.

The new case came from fleebay, it looks almost exactly the same as the original except for the LANDROVER logo, but on close inspection the buttons are smaller means you have to use all the parts supplied, the plastic is trick to glue, but it does look the part and it saved a fortune,

The open button is temperamental sometimes works ok then will not work for about half hour then go back to it and works perfectly again. Could this be due to the battery? Is there anybody out there (preferably) West Midlands that can replace battery and casing, for a fee of course, wouldn't want to risk doing it myself and completely breaking the fob. Thanks in advance. Thumbs Up
