No issue with Paul Smith having his car customised by SVO but I'm not sure it warrants the publicity which reminds me a bit of the Victoria Beckham fawning with the Evoque. He made a similar multi-coloured mess of customising a Leica camera a couple of years ago. Mark

I had a spare day today so I have been out and about at the main dealers looking at all the options, exterior colours and different interior combinations etc. On my travels came across an SVR in Estoril blue and must say it looked absolutely stunning in the showroom. I kept walking round and round it until I was dizzy, think the salesman thought I was crackers

Yes, the blue is great but difficult to keep clean. In the spring sunshine, it shows every mark and there's certainly a lot of car to wash and leather off. I'm wondering whether mud-flaps will stop the back getting so filthy. Mind you, it is that time of year.

I've only seen the SVR in white (no thanks) and reviewed in corris grey (ditto) and in red (looks good) and advertised in black (not sure). What other colours does that leave? Indus and one other which I can't remember.

Edit: oh yes, scotia grey. Would like to understand the mindset of someone choosing that but each to their own. Reminds me too much of the blanket cloud cover here at the Goodwood 73MM today. Mark

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

I can see the point of having your SVR in Estoril as it cannot be mistaken for any other version in the range. I also don't see the point of having any sporty car in black or white. Red/Yellow/Vivid green or any "in your face" colour. Scotia is actually a very nice colour, but too insipid for an SVR. I had a 2005 RRS in a similar shade but it was then called Giverny Green. The only comment I ever got about is was "Wow that is a nice colour in the flesh, is it one of the optional Autobiography paints?" No it was a standard metallic! I'm a little surprised that the SVR isn't offered in the metallic Phoenix Orange that Discovery Sport HSE Lux, Evoque Autobiography and the Defender 110 Adventure Final Edition are offered in. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

First pricing through for the 22s - the rims, list price, are £900 each including VAT.

Yesterday, I drove 350 miles to Sussex and back in a day and thrilled a couple of friends with the noise, performance and quality of the car. 23.4 mpg, better than I would ever have imagined. Fabulous sound quality from the audio system, Max Bygraves never sounded so good (joke!).

Especially impressive (again) is the radar cruise control. Just set it and a sensible distance from the car in front and the easiest journey on a cloggy M25. This car is all about performance, of course, but it's the best way to get from A to B and arrive relaxed and in good humour. Mark

I have to confess I haven't yet tried the automated parking for fear of kerbing my wheels. The reverse traffic detection is great as is the all-round sensor display but the rims are vulnerable and expensive and I'm not sure how repairable they will be if they get scuffed with (on the 21s at least) the polished surfaces right out to the edge. OTOH, I'm naturally attracted by the Continental tyre-tech.

The wheel arch spats look like trouble for retrofit. At least 5 separate items per side which have to be painted and fitted exactly with the right gaps to look right, plus, I'm not sure whether there are any differences in the sill covers where the spats come down to meet them.

Reinforces my view that if you ever think you might want the 22s, go for them at the outset and buy a set of 21s if you need "true" M&S. I think going the other way is a bit fraught. Mark

Don't have a price for those yet, my guess is the £2400 option price (IIRC) is probably evenly split between the extra cost of the rims, the tyres and the spats. Maybe, so I'm thinking about £800 painted and fitted. The side protection strips are £450 painted and fitted, so that sort of fits.

Waiting for a price for the tyres. The 21s are reasonable, something like £260 each, I can easily see the posh Continentals being £400 each.

But for now, I only know the list price of the rim. As for whether you should order, 80% of SVR orders apparently include them but I have not been able to sample them so it's a £6k gamble, more or less.

Tearing down some poorly maintained back roads in Sussex yesterday was great fun but made me think, actually, the 21s are already hard riding enough. I have cars with a harder ride but then I don't take them places I took the SVR yesterday. But, as I get used to it, I think the visuals are better with 22s. Mark

I have the reverse traffic detection on my Evoque and having it meant that I couldn't fit the rear mud flaps, may be the same with the spats required for the 22" wheels. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yes, I wondered the same but with the longer rear overhang of the RRS, the sensor is fitted further back which should leave space for mud-flaps. The mud-flap situation for the SVR is a bit confused, so I am going to be interested to see how Sally gets on with hers and certainly hope her dealer doesn't come back with, errrr, they don't fit.

The only restriction I am aware of is that the wade sensing doesn't work if you have side steps, presumably they block the sensor's view. It was also said they don't work with deployables which surprised me. Mark

The issue was that the rear mudflaps for the standard car do not fit the SVR because the profile of the rear bumper is different but hopefully the SVR specific ones are now ready. Mark

The cost of the 22s - wheels, tyres, TPMS valves and centre caps has come out at £4460, so they are on their way. The spats, if I decide I need them, are £180 a side plus painting and fitting. That last bit worries me because they have to be on straight. I expect there's a special jig at the factory to do it right.

Away driving with petrolhead friends who are very impressed, the car is easily capable of keeping up, even if its physical size slows you down on some of the narrower more twisty bits. It's drinking like a champ (18.6 mpg) and is absolutely filthy.

First actual quality issue, one of the headlamp wash covers is not retracting fully. It can be pulled out, plastic pins into some guides, might just need a little lubrication. Mark
