As an RR Sport virgin so to speak, I am debating what engine to go for when I take the plunge. Obviously on a forum I am going to get for's and against's (is that even a word?), for all the variants; therefore I thought the best (probably) way to judge overall opinion is with a poll.

Vehicle will be used for towing a caravan now and then. It will also make about 4 trips per year to essex; a round trip of approx 640 miles plus running around whilst down there. Other than that it will be just general use at home, only me driving. However I work in the Oil & Gas industry so am away quite a bit, hence the car would be parked up for up to 4 weeks at a time. Annual mileage I would put at no more than 10k |

This Poll will just tell you one thing. Which is the most popular engine for forum members. If you just want the most popular one then great. I have the TDV6 because the TDV8 double turbo blowing problem scared me. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST. |

But wouldn't it be the most popular for a reason, ie people have done their homework and arrived at the best engine option in their opinion. You yourself said that you chose the 6 over the 8 because of the turbo issues. It's these decisions amongst members that will have them arrive at a particular engine choice. Surely this poll will provide a trend for me to see? That was my thinking anyway |

Noted your comment re only wanting a diesel but, for an annual mileage of up to 10k only I would seriously consider the Supercharged. I was faced with exactly your question before I bought - I'm very glad that I went S/C (annual mileage is about 10k....)

If your budget allows then go for the SDV6. Nearly as much grunt as the TDV8 but much better economy and probably more reliability too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thanks for that Carl. I'm not totally averse to a petrol, it's just I am a diesel technician by trade and I just feel more comfortable working on them and have all the kit pertinent to diesel stuff. If I was to go petrol, the supercharged would most likely be the weapon of choice |

Popular for what reason? IMO you'd need something bigger than a 2.7 to tow your caravan. 2.7 pulling a 3 tonne motor around is already enough for that engine I'd say. My point is if the poll revealed 2.7 was most popular engine that doesn't mean its the most suitable for your circumstances. If I was towing a lot I'd probably go for the bigger engine, the TDV8. But as I don't I went for the baby one with one turbo which is fine for me. I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST. |

My caravan is only 1.3T in weight, kerb weight of the RR 2.7 TDV6 is 2.5T. The 'What tow car' site says the match is perfect at a 54% weight ratio. Obviously more horses and particularly torque will be better, but the 2.7 is more than adequate it would seem. |

Really? Im surprised. I think mines ok, plenty for its own weight but theres more than most on this forum that will tell you the 2.7 is under powered. Even the people that don't tow!

To be honest I can see how the 2.7 would be underpowered. The Sport is a heavy lump to haul around even for what would be a hefty engine in a family saloon. Been having a bit of a read of threads on here and other internet resources tonight, and the SDV6 is calling out |

The TDV6 is underpowered in its natural state, but with a software upgrade it is more than enough. Long time since I owned mine but the "chip" made the car what it should have been and got rid of the throttle lag too. The V8 is effortless, extremely quick with software help and more economical, downside is reliability.
