Could be a faulty upper tailgate switch. I had the same but the other way, kept popping open. If you can get into the tailgate switch you might find it full of water and what looks like loads of battery corrosion. I cleaned all mine out and it now works a treat again 2017 Range Rover Sport HSE |

I was lucky that as my tailgate was open I could pull the rubber cover off and get to the inside of it, the relay switch etc and get it cleaned. I had a right nightmare getting the rubber cover back on as I don't think I did it correct.

Ive got the same issue, button is faulty, but the 3rd button on my 2nd remote had been set by the previous owner to open it, so I know the mechanism works.

New switch is about 20 pounds from Duckworth parts on here, easy to replace from the outside, use a flat screwdriver to prise the rubber cover and switch out. The switch has a prong each side to stop it coming out (bit like what you see on a side repeater when you take them out) just catch the edge of one and it will pop out. Takes 5 minutes.
