As MW said both front and rear sensors are activated once you put the car in R. They stay on when you put it in D until you reach a certain speed. If you are just parking in front without having to reverse, you will need to switch it on manually. Sadly the car is not intelligent enough to tell whether you are parking or tailgating someone in a traffic jam. It could get very annoying in the latter scenario if it started beeping everytime you got close. My MY09 Sport used to do the same as the MY13 does.

This one is just to improve my understanding of the idiosyncrasies of these vehicles ... So on your 2005 RRS, the front sensors activated upon approach to, say, a wall but not to another car on the road, without putting the car into reverse or manually switching on PDC? |

During normal driving conditions at very low speeds - the sensors would pick up any object in front of my Sport or any car too close behind. |

If you put your forward alert on and your other half heads for a wall or someone suddenly slows without indicating you will get an audible warning. You can adjust the sensitivity to suit too MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys
