In relation of the full package, for me, yes.

Seen as an Engine only, the V8 Diesel is better compared to the V6 Diesel.
But both in ride compared, the construction of the new RRS is not so perfect for the SDV8. Means the balance is not as perfect as with all the other engines mounted.

But if this dose not matter, and V8 and Diesel is a must, why not.

That is a good point about the wight distribution for the SDV8.

So it seems the best choice is either go with SDV6 (with acceptable performance) or petrol V8 for a proper sporty drive.

There is one more option to consider though.. the hybrid, seems like it has the SDV8 performance, but should be lighter since there is only a small battery which I think should be around the middle of the car and set very low. The electric motor is a extension of the gear box... maybe the best of both worlds (SDV6/Cool? The negative thing about it would eb added complexity of course...

JLR building a Hybrid worries me to be honest , they are yet to perfect the first batch of cars and are only doing the hybrid to lower the groups carbon outputs to comply with the EU tax req's. as with all Hybrids the drive ability of the cars leaves a lot to be desired.

I think from what has been mentioned is that they may well be turning up the grunt on the SDV8 and of course there may also be the RRS GT 5.0SC appearing as well that is proven at 580HP , it is well known that the SDV8 is good for far more power but has been held back because of torque on the gear train and TEMPS , the new 8 speed handles more in other cars now and the new 9 speed handles another 15% torque over the 8 speed and of course that is now going in the cars as well.

A lot of this goes down to personal choice but IMO the car is named SPORT so should give a sporty type dynamic drive with a wide useable powerband and good for quick overtakes and should not be left for dead by other less capable cars out there with better 3.0 engines. IE the Porsche VW etc.

A close pal of mine has a SDV8 running at 18% above standard on power output and had teh same in his 2011 L322 the later covering 55K miles never missed a beat and the L405 now at 20K miles again no issues so this really proves the newer drive train handles the power with ease which is good news all round for owners as we should not be seeing gearbox issues etc as cars get older, unlike the double clutch systems. 2014 5.0SC AB

As regards to the SDV6 or the SDV8 the perfomance is so close that for me the v8 is not worth the extra outlay especially as the v6 is more than quick enough for RR. Also as they are the same price i think the SC would be the better buy, unless as Tbonner says they up the SDV8s power. SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.

but in the real world the performance is not close

Forget the BS 0-60 numbers based on a stripped bare 3.0 with no extra's fitted . that's the whole point of the thread.

Our 3.0 that my wife has is not even close to the SDv8 i have , even she has a face on with the 3.0 esp when doing an over take etc and she is not a heavy planted foot driver that is for sure.

I jump in both and the 3.0 would deff not be my choice that is for sure , and you cannot compare the 5.0SC to the 4.4 totally different drives and fuel numbers of course.

I here a rumour and only a rumour that the SDv8 is good for 398 HP and 890NM Torque without any issues on the newer 8 & 9 speed box. 2014 5.0SC AB

Thanks.
OK, let me check final the real Performance of both cars, as in my mind there must be something wrong with the SDV6 AB or your SDV8 is re-mapped? Smile

The difference you mentioned makes me woundering, but we can have a test stand and figure this out soon.

Best,
René

That would be really interesting to know the real weight with all the options you have.

I have moved to a car that is much slower RRS Black edition but I have found that performance no longer comes into the equation be it real world or not, granted 0-60 is useless in measuring performance. My Journey times remain the same and the only difference is that I arrive relaxed. In Germany I was travelling at about 175mph and I can tell you it was exhausting just waiting for a Trabant to pull out and then coming to road works stuck in the traffic and watch the cars that I had just overtaken pass me because I had made the wrong choice of lanes. The moral is get the car you enjoy driving because performance will not necessarily get you there any quicker. The track is the only safe place if you have a need for speed. Mr. Green Mr. Green

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

So it's almost the same weight as quoted by LR for the SDV8... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
