Noise from front end at 25-30 MPH...hub? wheel bearing?

Basics: Tires (Yokohama, Parada Spec-X) are only 5K miles old, alignment done at tire install. No vibration straight, or in a turn. New Lower control arms on both sides, and ADC system checked good at last oil change (800 miles ago)

Issue: The noise coming from the front end sounds like I'm running aggressive off road tires up to about 40 mph or so. Of course I'm not running off road tires. It started about 3 weeks ago after a really heavy snow and week of low temps (5-20F).

Question: The noise seems to be coming from the front right wheel, but is there a way to test the hub assembly before making the 45 mile trek to the dealer?

Thanks in advance. Not sure if there's enough detail to make an internet diagnosis, but happy to provide if needed. '12 RRS SC

Sounds very much like a wheel bearing from your description, jack the front end up and see if there is any play in the front wheels, try rocking the wheel by holding the top and bottom of the tyre, see if there is any movement. If there is, then its your wheel bearing that needs replacing.

Ady,
Thanks much for the reply. Is the wheel bearing serviceable seperate from the hub assembly? Should I change both anyway?

Thanks again! '12 RRS SC

Hi

I just did mine a few Sundays ago - not a hard job.

The bearing is part of the Hub. so if I recall quickly:

Jack up - make safe etc.

Wheel off, remove the middle drive shaft nut - use a long pry bar and 32mm socket.
Remove the Caliper and tie it up, you need to remove the ABS Sensor (8 mm)
Caliper has female Torx bolts - cant recall the size - I think 21mm
Remove the disk T50 Torx needed for the screw
Remove the brake shield if desired - I left mine in place.
remove 4 bolts on the back of the Hub
Now the fun bit - pull the bearing / hub off the spline shaft. I ended up using a puller from AutoZone and then also removed the top Ball Joint to give more room. Sacrifice a screwdriver to split the Hub from the carrier.

I picked up a Timken replacement from local autoparts as needed to be mobile

90 minute job if your good with the tools.

RJC,

So you just did the bearing and not the entire hub? Would a new hub come with the wheel bearings?

I drove with a buddy who seems to now think it may be the front dif... Big Cry

What was the bearing part #, if you still have it?

Thanks everyone! '12 RRS SC

SOLVED///

You were all correct. It was the right front hub assembly.

Good news was that my extended warranty covered it! I thought I just try it on a whim, not thinking it was a covered Item...glad to be wrong here. Equally glad that it wasn't the front dif!

Thanks for all the help! Thumbs Up '12 RRS SC
