I had similar experiance at Bose York too, I went and listened

Sound was ok, infact impressive in their acoustically correct sound studio, my bros in law has one of their Lifestyle systems and I thought it sounded good, great that he could watch tv downstairs whilst listening to the radio/cd etc upstairs in his bathroom/sauna as well as outside

Then my brother got his Pioneer kit with a couple of grands worth of speakers and it's loads better sound

Bose are Ok but seperate are better IMO

Member on here Kaine, does top end stuff, but his not on here much nowadays

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Rimini Red

always been a fan of separates, but if you want to do it on a budget, there are some great speakers and components available on Ebay to get you started.

I've used the entry level £350 all in one surround sound systems and never managed to get the right sound out of them... I have a Sony I fitted in my bedroom as it was no good for the living room.. I have a Yamaha A2 AV amp I spent £1k on 15 years ago and its still going strong, and It gets a good blasting (melted the crossovers in my B&W speakers once) !

My experience of onkyo is dry joints and HDMI boards failing amongst my friends even on the £2k flagship processor after 18 months, top end Pioneer AV amps with dry joints after 18 months, all easy fixes but shouldn't happen... saying that I run a Pioneer AV amp on my PC and its been good for the past 5 years....

I've sold on 12 year old Yamaha amps that are still going strong. I also have a Rel subwoofer costing £500 that is still going after 15 years, there's no mistaking you get what you pay for in this hobby. Big Cry

Maybe worth a trip to http://www.avforums.com/ and see what people are saying.. and selling Smile Why?.. Because i can....

my Onkyo Amp was great, 24 months warranty, HDMI board gives up the ghost on month 25 Evil or Very Mad

Good thing is Onkyo has agreed to repair on good will, though this doesn't happen often, the repairs have just had 50 hdmi boards delivered to repair the current backlog and i still need to wait for the second delivery before they can fix mine Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Banging Head Banging Head

still excellent service from Exceptional-Av who sold it to me, contacting the Onkyo rep and arranging

Spent last night running a extra couple of cables for the 2 extra surround sound speakers i got to make it the full 7.1 surround sound after i bought some KEF eggs from my brother, to upgrade from my Boston Accoustics XS i bought

Funny that, my Onkyo's warranty ran out in August of this year and guess what? It gave up the ghost in October! Like you though, Onkyo have agreed to repair it free of charge (albeit I had to pay for courier which was £48 ). Even although it is needing repair, I found it to be an excellent system (TX-NR809). These systems aren't cheap - with my speakers, which are Bowers and Wilkins, the whole set up came to close to £3k. 3.0 SDV6 HSE Dynamic, Corris Grey with contrast Santorini Black Panoramic Roof, lunar interior, privacy glass, upgraded Meridian system, cooled 18 way front seats, heated steering wheel, adaptive xenons, large screen wash bottle.

Mine was the 609, entry level, so they must have known I would not pay postage Laughing

I figure it was a dry joint, as it work when it was not switched off, heated up, but wouldn't just after switching on

@mw looking at the spec, no network option, which is something I find usefull as I got the option wifi card for mine to allow me to use spotify (that lasted 30 days) but I use it to allow me to control the amp via my iPhone or iPad

Switch over source, volume adjustments when I am out if the lounge, upstairs getting ready to go out

normally a home cinema will have separate speakers in a 5.1 configuration the .1 been the sub

Front Left <Centre> Front Right

Rear Surround <> Rear Surround

Subwoofer

You can obtain a set of fronts and maybe a centre with out the sub or the rear, but your not going to fulfil the amps capabilities

You'd need some good floor or loud speakers if you're going to drop the sub

I have the Cambridge Audio Minx which fulfilled the wife friendly v's quality I needed. Wouldn't touch Bose with a bargepole... average quality and way too expensive.

Look for 2nd hand speakers on ebay or AVforums... you can get great quality for a fraction of the cost of new.

Did you want surround sound for just movies?

If so one of the cheaper 5.1 "one box" solutions would be a good starter. But rigging it to run 5.1 via a sky link would be tricky... you'd need a cinema amp and traditional 5.1 for that. RRS gone
