I'm asking for some experience from my learned forum members regarding cars & insurance for a young driver.

still the cheapest way is for you to buy another car and insure it with him as a named driver, then when he has hopefully built up a bit of experience transfer over. this is perfectly legal btw as was discussed last week with my broker (NFU, who also said they can insure a defender for not mauch money on a "farm" policy)

Best bet is for him to be a named driver will save a fortune I did this on my 1st 4 cars (in 2 year period)

My 19 year old son bought himself a Fiat Punto this year. No experience so quotes were ridiculous - some more than the car value and third party was worse

Have been advised that apparently due to some insurance quirk "kit cars" are much cheaper for youngsters to insure.

Presumably kit cars are owned / driven by people who care about their vehicles and so, statisically, have less accidents. Or maybe most are 2 seaters and so less people get injured/killed when they crash. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Apparently Volvos are good cars as your first car for cheap insurance - i know someone who had one before passing purely because it was a cheap car and the cheapest to insure by far. Mike

How much to insure a 17 yaer old who has passed his test after 9 months. £1500 a month for 3 months plus £1000 they had had at the begining of the year. Morale of the story is to have the conversation on costs If /When he passes his test at 17, or tell he will not be able to drive ( if he passes )till he is 18. Obvious I canceled and moved elsewhere but no one will give a 17 yearold with a full liscence cheap Insurance. It was £3500 then and 2 years on its £565 on his own with his mum as a named driver( that does make difference) By the way he had a 60hp 05 reg fiesta style and now has a 1.4 seat ibeza so £565 isn't to bad. 07 tdv8 stornoway grey at home tucked up
