Advice regarding young driver

I'm asking for some experience from my learned forum members regarding cars & insurance for a young driver.

My son is about to turn 17 and wants to get behind the wheel of a car asap. Can any members who recently had experience regarding this let me know their experience. I think we will need to buy a car either new or old, what car is best and I know that insurance will be huge but what worked out the best way. Black Box, own policy - fully comp or 3rd party? etc. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

When I started driving I went for 3pft on my own policy, the sooner you start your own policy the sooner you build up your own NCB, only being 3pft meant it was a touch cheaper then fully comp, and an incentive to drive more carefully Laughing Current: 06 RR Sport HSE TDV6, Bonatti grey, black leather. Defender 90 pick up. Vito 110cdi

Previous: Mercedes CLS, BMW 330cd M sport, Nissan 200sx, Impreza STi, EP3 Civic Type R

still the cheapest way is for you to buy another car and insure it with him as a named driver, then when he has hopefully built up a bit of experience transfer over. this is perfectly legal btw as was discussed last week with my broker (NFU, who also said they can insure a defender for not mauch money on a "farm" policy)

Best bet is for him to be a named driver will save a fortune I did this on my 1st 4 cars (in 2 year period)

Allthough my insurance was 2k a year at 17 as a named driver but on a 1.8 Corsa SRI, I would think it would be higher than that now on a car along those lines.

Car wise that all depends, if it was me I would be going for a new fiesta 1.25 or a corsa cdti.

My 19 year old son bought himself a Fiat Punto this year. No experience so quotes were ridiculous - some more than the car value and third party was worse Rolling Eyes

In the end gocompare found best price with me and Mrs Muddy as named drivers on a policy in his name - halved his premiums Thumbs Up

Black box was dearer but I would have preferred he got one for the piece of mind Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Have been advised that apparently due to some insurance quirk "kit cars" are much cheaper for youngsters to insure.

Not sure what kit cars are about though or prices Now driving a rather smart looking Van

Presumably kit cars are owned / driven by people who care about their vehicles and so, statisically, have less accidents. Or maybe most are 2 seaters and so less people get injured/killed when they crash. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Apparently Volvos are good cars as your first car for cheap insurance - i know someone who had one before passing purely because it was a cheap car and the cheapest to insure by far. Mike

Having just been through this very situation, this is what we did,
Bought a Peugeot 107,used my NCB of my Range Rover and named myself, wife and son as drivers on the 107.
This was by far the cheapest way we could get insurance, still £1700 mind you and my Range Rover went up By £100 despite having no bonus on it,which was the most annoying as we seem to guard our NCB with are life and pay approx £30 per year to protect it,for what?To save £70 it seems.
This was all done via a broker my wife acts for,so he really did look into it for us.
Steve

Censored How much to insure a 17 yaer old who has passed his test after 9 months. £1500 a month Shocked Big Cry for 3 months plus £1000 they had had at the begining of the year. Morale of the story is to have the conversation on costs If /When he passes his test at 17, or tell he will not be able to drive ( if he passes )till he is 18. Obvious I canceled and moved elsewhere but no one will give a 17 yearold with a full liscence cheap Insurance. It was £3500 then and 2 years on its £565 on his own with his mum as a named driver( that does make difference) By the way he had a 60hp 05 reg fiesta style and now has a 1.4 seat ibeza so £565 isn't to bad. 07 tdv8 stornoway grey at home tucked up
x type jag work and back hack
x5 Gone - never fully loved or cared for
Disco td5 gone - saved a fortune on ear plugs
Freelander gone - one of the first and worst
early disco gone- A tractor in a fur coat.

There are two other options you should look into :

1) Use a black box insurer - they can usually offer a competitive price for new drivers by installing a black box and restricting use of the car

2) I have heard that classic cars on classic insurance are extremely competitive for new drivers. Maybe similar to the kit car quirk but probably a lot more classic cars to choose from and at least you now they were built properly, assuming no previous accidents etc

Good luck with the search Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)
