Tow bar question?

Hi All,

I have a quick question.

I bought a new detatchable land rover tow bar for my RRS, I fitted it on its clicks in place and I can lock and unlock and detach.

When I press down on the silver small pin (off the car), the lock spins 180 Deg and the main locking pin protrudes out far. When it fitted to the car the lock only spins 1/2 way and the main locking pin does not protrude out the back of the chassis. Is this correct?

I thought that the main pin would go right though the chassis, ( that small hole it locks into) mines seems to be 1/3 of the way.

Thanks
The Sheep

Mine does the same thing. I spent a lot of time looking at it trying to get it to go all the way through the chassis hole. Never managed to get it to do more than you describe though. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

If I was using mine for towing more than I have been (the horse hasn't been out on an outing for ages) then I'd have a multi-height bar fitted for security. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

My detachable tow bar is the same. Going back to Land Rover dealer on Monday to check it for me. Bought for occasional horse box towing so need to be sure.

Tow Bar Pin

Hi Sheep

Try pressing the pin back IN against a hard surface!

If I have understood you correctly that is how I have overcome this as per advice from the fitters of my tow hitch.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bazalab,

I not sure what that would do. I think from the above comments that this seems to be common.

Guess the question is do the pins stick out the chassis or are they suppose to be 1/3 rd of the way?

Thanks
Paul

Hi Sheep1903, Spoke to a guy from Land Rover. The factory fitted bracket on the car is tapered at the back so gets thicker towards the top. Theres more of the pin going through the locating hole than you think. Also there should be no green band showing on the lock when it is fitted and as mentioned the key should come straight out when locked.

Mine did the same. I took a very fine detail file to the housing on the car and just cleaned up the rough casting marks in the slot the locking 'pin' goes into. The 'pin' now goes a bit further into its slot.

If you try this don't use an agressive file or you could take too much metal off. You could also try polishing the casting with some fine emery cloth.

I'll add a disclaimer that it worked on my car / tow hitch, but you do this at your own discretion. I'm in the shed, I'll be back in the real world in a minute.
