Wheel bearings

Afternoon,

I am going to replace both front wheel bearings on my RRS 2005 model. I have found aftermarket on ebay for around £50 - £60 ish. I think genuine LR bearings are around £200??

Quite a price difference so wondering what others have done? Tempted to buy the aftermarket for the saving in £'s but worried they might not be any good.

The ones i was thinking of going for are made by elite auto and are sold by a company called andys autoparts based in Oldham on ebay and come with 12 months guarantee for £59.95.

What does everyone think?

£109.44 for an OEM Timken bearing as used by Land Rover, we have a slightly cheaper option.

I wouldn't buy any of the cheapies they have a poor history on the forums.

As a matter of point my slightly cheaper one is the cheapest I can get without going for unbranded Chinese stuff, which incidentally, I can buy for less than £25 but I suspect safety is worth more than that. Paul Redding

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that surely the cheaper ones have to pass testing etc so that they dont crumble etc otherwise they would not be allowed to be sold?

I was thinking they are just cheaper as mass produced aborad somewhere so can be made cheaper and also someone like LR not adding their mark up on top of the base price?

Nice thought but far from the truth.

Do an internet search for the brand name and see what you find, then search for known bearing makers such as SKF, FAG, NTN and then of course Timken. Out of all of the big global makers only Timken make this bearing anything else on the market is made to a price not a quality level.

Post this same question over on the Disco3 forum (same part) and you will get lots of opinions quickly. Paul Redding

Tried searching on the manufacturer but nothing obvious came up. I am not a member on any other sites. I will have a think about which one to go for then.

Thanks

Hi rrs si,

So you may save £50 - £60.00 putting cheapo eBay ones on but how much do you value your RRs, family, yourself if it goes all crumbly on the M1?

Steve's the man and knows what he's on about I suspect he's also being diplomatic.

Well matey for safety's sake I cant understand why you would just to save a few notes?

Your call though buddy.

Of course you are right Dave on the safety thing!!!

But following the same reasoning then why put Timken ones on which are around half the price of genuine LR ones? Are they half as good and then the ebay ones half as good again?

I am intrigued as to where the price difference comes from if you get where I am coming from as I would not expect that they could be sold if they were a safety risk?

Simon

Timken are OEM for Land Rover, the difference is entirely the colour of the box, you get more printing from Timken! Paul Redding
