Hi all,
Today being rather cold and damp I noticed what seems to me like an issue with the cabin heating and wondered if this is a fault or just how they work.
The car warms up ok and cabin warms up. The side windows however were still misted up and not clearing. No problem I thought I would just adjust the vents on the sides of the dash to direct the air. I noticed that there was virtually no air coming from any of the vents. The unit was on auto with both sides set to 20 degrees. I switched to manual and turn the fan knob fully clockwise. Still no decernable flow of air. Pressing the demist button delivered a strong flow of air to the windscreen vents but nothing to the dash vents (as expected). The only way I could get any real flow of air from the dash vents was to turn the driver side temp control down to max cooling (this also set the passenger side to lowest setting). Switch back to auto 20 degrees and again no air flow.

I have also noticed that when using the timed or remote heating (FBH) the cabin windows don’t really de-ice and the fan does not speed up to blow the hot air into the cabin and window demist vents.

So is this normal or do I have a fault with the heating control unit causing it not to control the fan correctly?

Aren't there some buttons to say where you want the air to come out ?

Yes there are direction buttons but issue was more that the fan was not switching to a high speed setting. Unless I set temp to max cooling. -----------------------------------------------

Clogged pollen filter?

Yes worth a check.
Would a clogged pollen filter stop the fan running at higher speeds? -----------------------------------------------

When in Auto, the fan may not run at high speed if the cabin temp is close to setpoint. If you can manually increase the fan speed without a problem then I’d say it was fine. A blocked pollen filter will restrict airflow from the vents as all delivered air goes through this filter.
To check, try removing the filter and check if there’s a dramatic increase in air from the vents, though, when you remove it, it will be obvious if it is clogged. These filters are specified to be changed at every service for a reason, they need it as they become blocked quite quickly with dust.

That’s interesting as mine doesn’t seem to blow half as much as my other RRS2 did but didn’t think of pollen filter,I’ll check mine this week,when mines on full power it hardly sends any heat out.

Just in case anyone is thinking about it, don’t be tempted to remove the pollen filter permanently. If you do, dust will collect on the fan impellers reducing its efficiency and will also eventually clog the air passages in the heat exchanger and evaporator which will result in them having to be removed and cleaned.
For the cost of the filters and the ease in which they can be replaced, it’s worth changing them out regularly. Doesn’t hurt to swap them every six months. The carbon coated ones will also remove odours, so worth paying a little more for these over the non coated cheaper versions.

If its blowing hard on defrost it doesn't sound like the filter, but easy to check

It’s worth checking Andy because what can happen when the fan is running at max with a blocked filter, the suction can be enough to deform the filter allowing unfiltered air to pass. When the fan speed is lowered, the filter regains it’s shape in the housing

older ones, you open the glovebox.

pull the side supports out (to access fusebox)

and there is a small letterbox that the filter slides into at the top
