I have had a Mitch Hitch for a couple of years - works fine if you don't mind it hanging out the back.

Thanks Gary. In what way do you consider it to be better or worse than the Land Rover tow hitch?

I hear they are very popular down under...but why?

Does it interfer with the parking sensors?

Thx. Ra-Ro Sport Super Dooper Charged.

Well the original hangs down too low causing ground clearance problems and safety issues when they continually get bashed - there have been occasions where they have failed. Also they are often too low for our offroad vans and trailers.

The Mitch Hitch is much higher and out of the way as far as ground clearance is concerned and more in line with the height of offroad vans.

You can see that the height matched my offroad camper quite well.

They are popular here because they are made here and they work - plus if you don't have a tow hitch they cheaper than the Land Rover hitch.

The only downside is they they do hang out the back and some say they spoil the lines of the car. Also if the actual hitch is in the receiver it sticks out a bit and people can skin their shins on it in dark car parks.

Oh - interfers with centre parking sensors - these can either be blanked off just leaving the outers, the centers can be turned so the beams miss the hitch or you can do what I did - get some thick clear rubber stick on furniture floor protectors and cut them in a shape that shields the inner side of the sensors so the inside are blocked (works basically the same as turning them without the hassles)

Cheers

Would that towbar do for the likes of a 1ton Sankey trailer? Always fancied one as they are quite literally bullet proof!

Why would they be illegal? They do carry a certification plate.

It's only a receiver hitch mount so I can't see why it would be deemed illegal?....oh hang about...anything and everything that makes common sense to a Land Rover owner in the UK is banned so I can see why is might be classed as illegal.

This is by far the strongest mounting system I have seen so far for a recovery and towing point. It uses 4 x 19mm HT bolts to tie it into the chassis as well as using the forged recovery eye as part of the system.

How much do they cost in Oz Garry? Ra-Ro Sport Super Dooper Charged.

Because it's not "CE"/"E" marked 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Fair enough - I guess for the same reason most stuff from the UK including your hitches is not certified for use here.

What we need is proper international standards. But too many politicians are against that sort of thing it seems. Big Cry 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks RRSTDV8 - as he answered.

Yes anything after a 1998 vehicle needs to be CE/EU approved for towing...this is the vehicle (already is) hitch and the towball....not just one of those elements BTW!

That was my point.

For the point of clarity - i think the device is a great idea...although im sure Land Rover do one already that sits lower for none EU markets...or was that older models. Mike

The standard Landrover combined towball/hitch that is sold in the UK is not legal in Aust and a different arrangement is sold here. The combined units (doesn't matter what vehicle) are illegal as it is considered that the "swan neck" is prone to fatigue cracks and failure. As far as I am aware we have not had failures of the actual hitch but there have been failures where the whole lot falls out of the rear cross member (same connection in both UK and Aust versions).

I wasnt talking about the swan neck Thumbs Up i was talking about a square receiver hitch that used to be available.

Although its ironic, europe deems the mitch hitch to be unsafe but the swan neck (as per most cars) safe and you guys are almost the other way around! Mike
