I have had a Mitch Hitch for a couple of years - works fine if you don't mind it hanging out the back.

Thanks Gary. In what way do you consider it to be better or worse than the Land Rover tow hitch?

Well the original hangs down too low causing ground clearance problems and safety issues when they continually get bashed - there have been occasions where they have failed. Also they are often too low for our offroad vans and trailers.

Would that towbar do for the likes of a 1ton Sankey trailer? Always fancied one as they are quite literally bullet proof!

Why would they be illegal? They do carry a certification plate.

It's only a receiver hitch mount so I can't see why it would be deemed illegal?....oh hang about...anything and everything that makes common sense to a Land Rover owner in the UK is banned so I can see why is might be classed as illegal.

Because it's not "CE"/"E" marked 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Fair enough - I guess for the same reason most stuff from the UK including your hitches is not certified for use here. Garry 07MY RRS TDV6 Arctic Frost Aspen Interior |

What we need is proper international standards. But too many politicians are against that sort of thing it seems. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The standard Landrover combined towball/hitch that is sold in the UK is not legal in Aust and a different arrangement is sold here. The combined units (doesn't matter what vehicle) are illegal as it is considered that the "swan neck" is prone to fatigue cracks and failure. As far as I am aware we have not had failures of the actual hitch but there have been failures where the whole lot falls out of the rear cross member (same connection in both UK and Aust versions). I wasnt talking about the swan neck i was talking about a square receiver hitch that used to be available. Although its ironic, europe deems the mitch hitch to be unsafe but the swan neck (as per most cars) safe and you guys are almost the other way around! Mike 2014 Facelift Discovery |
