Uneven Brake Disc Wear?

I recently took my 2010 TDV8 to the local dealer, for them to take a look at a number of 'electronic issues', plus, what I thought may have been warped discs, as the steering wheel was starting to jiggle under braking from motorway speeds. (The car is still under LR warranty, as it's not yet 3 years old).

The electrical problems seem to have been sorted, but I had a call from the dealer to advise that my discs weren't warped, but the nearside one had worn unevenly, so everytime a thicker part of the disc passes through the calliper, it grabs slightly, which is what's causing the steering wheel wobble.

The dealer then told me that this isn't due to a problem with the disc, or abnormal wear, so that will be £450 to supply and fit new front discs and pads, thank-you...

I had the work done, as I wasn't prepared to risk continuing with the braking problems longer than necessary, and I told the dealer that I would be speaking with LR Customer Services, to obtain their advice on the matter.

When I called LR, they told me that all they can do is contact the dealer and ask for their opinion, so, there was no surprise when LR Customer Services eventually also told me exactly the same thing as the dealer.

I'd therefore be grateful for the opinion of anyone with some technical knowledge of braking systems, as I don't see how a disc brake can end up worn to varying thicknesses, unless there is a problem somewhere?

Cheers,
Rob

Suspect your dealer may just be right for a change. But the fault may have been caused by them too.
Someone posted this great link a while back which explains all about brake judder: http://www.powerbrake.co.za/tech_info/tech_01_judder.htm

Did you have your discs changed within the last 1k miles by any chance? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks Paddi - great article, which may work as extra leverage with the dealer. (I'm now on my third local dealer, having already abandoned two who were complete idiots!).

I bought the car about 12 months ago, with 24k on the clock and no apparent problems with the brakes then.

Most of my driving is on the motorway, so the brakes tend not to get worked too hard and when I last looked at the discs and pads beforee the recent change, there was minimal wear.

I had assumed they were still original parts, but am now wondering if they had been replaced and not fitted properly, which resulted in the problem. Presumably the dealer should be able to tell me if the discs have been replaced during a previous service?

The symptoms certainly seem to be as mentioned in the article, in as much as once the problem became apparent, I could almost feel it worsening by the week.

Thanks again for the info.

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Santorini Black

Hi Guys

I have had to have two sets of discs/pads changed on my RRS MY11. I first felt steering vibration at around 3,000 miles. New discs/pads on warranty. Then at about 9,000 miles, halfway to the Alps they went again. This time one of the discs had cracked as well !!.

This time discs went back to LR who recommended a harder set of pads. The brakes were then fine until 13k when i upgraded to a MY13.

So I would not accept the charge and expect it to be covered by warranty.

Good Luck

I had this on my 11 my and 13 my sports...different mileage etc, all changed under warranty for the updated set as per the technical bulletin

First they check the wheel balance and tracking.

On the 13 it wasn't as bad as the 11 but still unacceptable Mike
