Strange Transmission "symptom"

Hi,
I have a question if anybody has or had a similar symptoms with his transmission. I noticed that when I first start the car in the morning and shift it to D car pulls smoothly, changes the gear from first to second and third (or even higher gear) but than the strange thing happens when I release the accelerator the rpmīs return to idle which is around 900 rpm. Then when I press the accelerator again the transmission picks it up where it left it so for example -I am driving in third gear 2000 rpm and release the accelerator the rpmīs go down to idle around 900 rpm(the car behaves as it was in neutral-but it is not) and when I press the accelerator again the transmission picks it up in third gear again.

After about 3 km the transmission "magically" starts to work as it should - when you release the accelerator rpmīs donīt fall to idle and if the speed decreases the transmission starts to shift down as it should... I thought that the oil change in the transmission will cure the symptom but it didnīt Big Cry

Anybody knows what could be wrong and how to fix it Bow down ?

Am I the only one thinking..."are you sure this is not just normal?" Doesn't the torque converter disengage when there is no load? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

try 3 steps...

1 Do a torque convertor 'stall' test - Left foot on brake as hard as possible, increase engine revs in 'D' and onbserve if the revs hold steady as convertor 'holds' the power. If it doesn't it might be fluid, filter, pump etc. If you get noises its probablt the barke bands need adjustment. Don't hold the engine and gearbox in stall for more than 10secs.

2. Accelerate hard (allow for traffic) and see if gear changes are all smooth without false neutrals.

3. Do a coast down test - drive at about 45mph and release accelerator and let the car slow down and observe if the gearbox changes down smoothly make sure you let the speed drop off naturally and completely.

If these test all happen without any drama then you'll need to have the electronics checked out.

Mine does this
Dealer not really interest
I paid for new gearbox oil which solved it for a thousand miles then the symptoms came back again.

Also feels like its reving too high when accelerating?

If you drift up to your speed its as smooth a silk,

I'll try the torque test though as someone gas suggested failing TC even though the dealer disregarded this totally when I suggested it. RRS gone

So I am not the only one with a problem like that...Scotty and Awd how long do you have those symptoms with transmission? Mine started 3 months ago (car has only 62k Km) and are still there even after the oil change in the transmission last week -no change at all!

Paddi I don't think that it is normal because transmission does that only first 2-3km in the morning (it is the same feeling as in a new Boxter with PDK which has coastal mode) but than afterwards rpm's are not going down to idle any more.

drdelrrs I will try that ...hopefully I am not going to fu.. up the transmission with brake/accelerator test

Just the update I tried all the steps as drdelrrs mentioned and all were ok ....so don't know what to do next. But I also have to mention that I drove an Evoque with automatic transmission (cold start in he morning car was 2 months old) and I have to say that the transmission did the same as mine for the first 2-3km Shocked 2008 RRS TDV8 HSE, Java black, Alpaca,.....

Well after reading your posts I noted that mine does the same. Could it just be part of the normal warming up procedure? Maybe to prevent car going too fast when in drive with foot off the gas i.e. just creeping along in traffic? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Paddi I do hope that it is a part of a warming up procedure due to the fact that the transmission oil is cold....but like my LR service said Let's wait and see what spring and summer will bring us Whistle 2008 RRS TDV8 HSE, Java black, Alpaca,.....

This is normal...

The TCC (Torque Convertor Clutch) does not engage until the engine coolant is up to temperature, hence the engine revs dropping.
It helps prevent any excess engine wear when cold, and helps improve fuel economy Thumbs Up

As per Disco_Mickey.

Its all about emissions. The idea is the keep engine revs up so that the temperature gets to normal quickly, this with the diesel heater reduces emissions and increases catalytic convertor and DPF life. You may notice that the gear change points are at higher revs - unless you are in one of the terrain programs e.g. snow and ice, hill descent etc .

Once all the senosrs say everything is up to temp. then the gearbox / torque convertor 'lockup' function that gives engine braking kicks in.
