Snow socks not guaranteed to be accepted as a suitable alternative in the alps.

Thanks - yes i had come to the conclusion that snow socks wouldnt be acceptable in the alps for snow chains.

I had looked at the spikes (which are the same as the LR ones) when googling earlier...the advantage is they are the same as the LR ones...the down side is they require the plate fitted to the wheels before you leave and are expensive.

Do any of the normal chains work? or will they destroy something? Mike

I've no idea I'm afraid, I've only ever been in a defender or P38, not taken the RRS to the alps yet.

Sweden 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HST Java Black

MSE, this topic was up just a few days ago.

According to Land Rover (Look in manual p.239),
snowchains is NOT to be mounted on 20" rims,
the danger of destroying brakelines and other stuff
is apparent, due to not enough clearance.

The recommended rims for snowchains is:
17x8" 18x8" and 19x8", and if fitted,

ONLY ON FRONTWHEELS.

Edit:

Took a look on the Spikes Spider Sport,
and guess thyat thesde c o u l d be used on the car, since there
seems to be nothing on the inside of the rim.

Best regards

Sorry thats not accurate any more and could be you using an old manual - for the 2013MY Range Rovers you can use snow chains on the front on 20inch rims...Land Rover recommend you dont have any that hook around the rear of the tyre (between the wheel and suspension...this is because you will destroy everything including brakes).

So you have to get the type that dont hook around the rear...there are a few on the market - land rover recommend the spike spiker (which is who make the genuine version). They bolt a plate on the wheels and then clip to that.

There are some others of better design that attach to one nut etc...the key is to make sure the chains are on a max of 3/4 of the tyre:

Quote:
If it becomes necessary to fit traction devices,
the following points must be observed:
• No traction devices should be fitted to the
rear wheels.
• Single sided spikes-spider traction devices
can be fitted to the front wheels of vehicles
fitted with 18, 19 or 20 inch diameter
wheels.
• The wheels and tyres fitted must conform
to the specifications of the original
equipment.

I work out in the Alps during the ski season and while I carry a set of chains (requirement if you don't want to get turned around) with Ice & Snow tyres have never had to put them on and I go to some fairly remote chalets.
