Insurance

Hi everyone,
My sons just passed his driving test, he's 17 years old, who and how would be the best way of insuring him without having to pay 86k for fully comp on a 1.2 vehicle.

Thanks

look for a insurance company that does the black gps box scheme

read some thing they get cheaper insurance if one fitted and if they go over the speed limit there insurance goes up bit by bit

cant remember who does it? lad who worked for me had one , it reduced his by half, but he had to drive like miss daisy!!!

If they go over the speed limit, the price goes up
If they accelerate too quickly, or brake too harshly, the price goes up
If they corner too fast, the price goes up
If they travel at the wrong time of day/night, the price goes up
If they fart or cough when driving, the price goes up

Not a fan of these systems at all, and you may end up paying more if he starts showing off a bit in front of his mates. IMHO, unless its a ridiculous quote, I would take the hit and buy a "proper" policy, and add on parents etc as named drivers

i shopped around and got my 18 year old daughter insured on our Cooper SD for an additional £600. Well worth it for the safety and independence of being able to drive herself. FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

+1 They drive at 60 - 70 on a dual carrageway or motorway but the GPS 'thinks' they are on the 'B' road alongside and you get hammered. Some of the systems are good but when they go wrong it's difficult proving it.

Shop around and take the hit in my opinion. Good luck Thumbs Up

I work in motor insurance and best advice I can give you is to make sure they do pass plus, once passed most insurers will give you a discount equivalent to one years no claims bonus and also looks good to an insurer

My 19 year old son passed his test in the summer and my insurer refused to insure him on the group 13 mini we bought to replace the group 23 FL1 we got rid of Shocked

My daughter cost £80 pa when she was a learner and they wanted £1700 for him on the FL1 Rolling Eyes

Sadly a girl he knew his age was killed last week after hitting a telegraph pole in fog and he has decided he is better off not driving Sad Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Adrian Flux are good they gave us the best price for our son when he first passed his test but it was still £2100 for a 1.4 Golf 2004 13 months ago.
We checked all the box options and the restrictions are crazy. Spud Smile

Comparison sites are the best thing.

only add the mother on if possible as thats the best way to bring the premium down.

I use to be with a company called Iron traders years ago who got bought out by elephant and did month by month insurance all online. iiRC about 12yrs ago now. But was £25 a month fully comp for me with my mum added on for a Renault 5 1.4 auto. I think the auto bit was the clincher! all my friends had novas and stuff that were 1.0 or 1.2 at best but the company got bought out by elephant who put a stop to it all and after that i was paying circa £900 a year Sad

Adrian Flux are good or HIC as i inusred all my turbo's and sporty renaults through them and could never be beaten by other mainstream companies but i also kept my excess high, as i kept that much in a savings account should the worst come to the worst. Its the best tactic. I also wasn't lucky enough to have mine paid for by my folks. They gave me the car mind Smile FFRR Owner, SSRR engine destroyer!(*2) & Creator of SSRR Smile

Just been quoted £733 by LV to insure 19 year old son on swmbos mini with us too - this is over a £1000 cheaper than best quote last summer Shocked

Despite changes regarding female drivers they want £150 more if I do it just for just male drivers Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

When I passed my test in 2004 I did my pass plus and this almost halved my premium with norwich union. I ended up paying £600 for a 1.6 at the time when all my uni friends were paying over £1200 for 1.2l cars. I did have a couple of years NCB from my motorbike days as well which helped.

Be careful not to go for a cheap quote only to find out it's for 10 months insurance rather than 12.

Best ways to keep it low - pass plus, restricted mileage, kept on private driveway, no modifications, parents as named drivers, vehicle is fitted with an alarm/immobiliser and it is used for social and domestic use (which I think allows travel to one permanent place of work).

If you put them as named drivers on your policy, it might be cheaper in the short term but they will get hit as soon as they try to get their own policy as they won't (always) be able to use the NCB as they were only a named driver and not the policy holder. Also, if the insurance companies know that a named driver will be the main driver of the vehicle then they will make them get their own policy.

The black box solution is all well and good but it's a little too 'big brother' for my liking and also has the potential to cost more than a normal policy.
