TDV8 - Low Power

I'm getting a 'low power' warning and music system is shutting down!!
I've searched on here and it sounds as if it might be either an alternator or battery issue.
Is there any way I can verify the issue without having to book it into the dealer again or wait until it breaks down??

Thanks in advance

I suppose you could see if you can try a new battery and see if that cures it, but that will only help in the short term if it's the alternator. I'm not particularly technically gifted with cars Embarassed , but is there a way you can check the alternator output yourself ?

From what I've read on here over the past year or so, the alternator seems to show a number of random signs of giving up the ghost, people have tried to compile a list of signs, but it seems to be a bit of a dark art Laughing ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Now that it's a tad warmer it's pointing toward a failing alternator I think.

I suppose the first thing would be to check the battery voltage with the engine off and then with it running. If you get low voltage followed by decent voltage then that might suggest the battery is dying. If the voltage doesn't rise much with the engine running then that might suggest an alternator that is dying.

Alternatively, find someone with a fault code reader and see if the car has stored any useful fault codes.

The TDV8 is a bit of an alternator muncher so that would be the most likely issue. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for the responses so far. Given these cars ability to burn through alternators and I know this car of mine had one replaced at some stage in the past (don't know how long ago) should the good folk at LR not have upgraded this component and installed a more capable option?? --------------------------------------------------------
