Front end suspension knock

Sorry guy's but this is a must ask Rolling Eyes Guy at work had his Sport ( 57 plate ) in for a new alternator at an independant Landrover garage, when he returned to pick it up the mechanic asked him if he had a knocking from his suspension the answer was yes of course I do, the mechanic then told him theres a new fix out that dampens the knocking right down to almost nothing by fitting two heavy dampers to the front end ( similar to the rear ). They had just completed the job on another Sport and the knocking was gone. Any ideas' is this the latest fix or have I have missed something in our suspension threads? Big Cry

My 2010 Sport HSE had new anti-roll bar bushes fitted at 20000 miles and was perfect but now at 29000 the knocking is coming back. Sorry to bore you all with this same old subject Yawn .

The body dampers were removed as part of a TSB to cure the knock. Not convinced they would do anything.

It may not be the reccomended repair, but I have fitted ARB shims to a few ARC-equipped cars, and they have been fine ever since, some have been fitted for a good 2 years now, with no sign of the knock returning Thumbs Up

Hi
thanks for the reply, the guy said it was big heavy dampers same as the heavy cast steel ones on the back ?

cheers

They are big harmonic dampers bolted onto the chassis rails.

IMHO, it's masking the issue, not curing it

Perhaps you can be forewarned by my experience? When I had the 'knocking over poor road surfaces' fault an LR Dealership just threw my cheque book at it by changing the front ARB bushes, chucking away the front pair of body dampers, bolting on the big lumps of pig iron (oh sorry - carefully engineered 'harmonic dampers') and renewing the whole ARC bar assembly. Total bill around 2K.
If you read the relevant TSBs LR should really have inspected all the suspension components for wear, cleared off any stones and debris lodged between the ARC bar and the chassis, replaced anything worn and then tried each one of the fixes above in turn, test driving the car at each step to see if the knocking was fixed. I'm guessing they didn't do that and just bolted on all the new parts regardless. KERCHING!
Like DM I am unconvinced that chucking away parts of my car and adding great big fat weights are examples of elegant engineering solutions. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Your right Paddi, sometimes wonder if the LR mechanics know what there doing or LR themselves ?? Just back from LR workshop they have fitted another pair of ARB's, and agian the cars silent not a knock squeek our rattle. So it looks like my Sport eats ARB's it's only 29000 miles used only on normal roads I even avoid pot holes And speed bumps. My Sport will be 3 yrs old next July 2013 Does this mean LR is then off the hook and I will need to buy ARB's in bulk by the box ? Crying or Very sad

I have a 2000 XK8 with 110000 miles under it's belt with original ARB's it doen't knock, just need to get on with it Evil or Very Mad

cheers

Think the ARB bush shims were an interim fix by LR and then the ARB bushes were upgraded. Interested to know if DM fitted the shims to the later bushes or just in addition to the earlier bush?
In case of my RRS which has done only about 33k - a contributing factor to premature ARB bush demise could have been that when I acquired it the tyres were all grossly overinflated - looked as if someone had mixed up PSI with Bar so they were at about 3.6 Bar (54 PSI!). Tyres now all renewed. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

You would have to think that with the constant stream of these issues that the original design and manufacture is "not fit for purpose" and any repair cost should be recoverable from LR - it would rely on getting independent data as proof!

You would think that just an extra 1mm or 2mm on the bush would tighten the whole lot up, and help prevent it knocking.

That is the case with the non-ARC bushes. Have never had to replace a set of bushes after having fitted a set of ARB shims...
