Hi,
My 55 2.7 HSE has a clunk from what feels like the OSF side when i hit the brakes hard, it does not happen when i brake slightly. The last MOT noted play in the OSF wheel bearing, could this be it? Has anyone else experienced this? It sounds like a anti roll bar bush or similar?

Could be a sticky brake calliper / pot.......... It could also be the dreaded "knockety-knock" from the suspension bushes or as the MoT has picked up - a bearing. I think this is a different problem to the ubiquitous "knock" that we all know and love.

I'd say bearing first. One further way of analysing wheel bearings is to listen for noise changes as lateral load is applied. Usually a worn front wheel bearing would make a noise when it is loaded on the outside of a turn. You might be able to test in a safe place (empty car park for example) by braking hard whilst carrying out a right turn. This will load the OSF wheel bearing. DOes it still knock? Is it worse or lessened?

Obviously, care is required when turning and braking!

Might also be a top mount? Not sure if air suspension would suffer this like normal struts can? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Are you sure it's not the solenoid for the auto selection stick? Mine makes a clonk when you touch the brake.

+1 - my thoughts. Tap pedal whilst at rest to experience noise then see if that is it....

I am going to replace the front discs and pads and at the same time do the Osf wheel bearing. Some of these comments give me some confidence that we may resolve it doing the above. Also, I notice a very very slight 'rumble' or vibration on the steering wheel whilst turning sometimes, I hope this is the bearing......

That sound has all the hallmarks of a wheel bearing mixy, but just check that your wheel bolts are tight on your front wheel first.

I had two new tyres fitted last week and the wheel bolts were air gunned on. My guy checked all bushes/mounts etc and the only play he found was the bearing. This was also an advisory on the mot from feb12. Reckon that a new bearing will Cyrene both. Seen them on eBay for circa £70, does any know better LR parts supplier?

That doesn't necessarily mean that they are still tight

Wheel bolts were airgunned on? Did they use a torque wrench to finish the tightening having had the guns set to minimum or were the guns just set to maximum?

Wheel bolts should not be fitted with airguns. Great way to end up with bolts that are impossible to undo or are damaged.

Okay..... i need some more help here....

I have just replaced the faulty wheel bearing, the two rods that connect the track rod ends to the steering rack and all the disk/pads. The clunk is still here. This is the scenario;

I drive the car and jab the brakes and it clunks for the lower suspension area.
I drive the car and slowly press the brake and nothing, no clunk.
I drive the car in reverse and jab the brakes, nothing, no clunks.... mmmmm this could be a clue!
I drive over a speed bump at low speed, no clunk.
I drive over a large pot hole and the quick jolt to the suspension makes the clunk.
I have no play in the steering.

The clunk sounds like it is coming from a bush or wishbone mount, the clunk also has a kind of 'dry' squeak with it suggesting that it is also rubber.

Any thoughts, any one had this problem before?

my guess = it's the ARB. Try the reverse test at speed of 30mph+ (!!!) to confirm this

Problem solved..... or will be when the work is done on the 4th April.

I took my car down to www.landranger.co.uk in Stockport, they test drove the car then used a few 'levers' to diagnose the problem. It is my NSF lower wishbone rear bush that has gone. The part is circa £170 for a genuine item and fitting is £35 per hour, appx 4 hours work, whilst they are at it they will replace the ARB bushes as well.

Hopefully this will solve the problem.

If anyone is in the Stockport/South Manchester area, these guys are worth a call, great value and excellent knowledge about LR product.

I will update this thread post work...... fingers crossed.
