NEW YORK >>> HELP NEEDED

Ok, so always wanted to go.

Taking my Mrs when she's got half term (she's a teacher before any of you wise arses say anything Wink )
Valentines happens to fall on that week.. (purely by coincidence..) but suddenly just thought..

Where the hell do you go for a meal for the obligatory night Neutral ... i've never been before, know noone there, and no one i know, knows NY very well... i am betting someone here does though Very Happy ??

So any info appreciated guys.. nothing too fancy mind just something relatively central and a decent place.. italian/indian would be good or any other relatively fancy place? anyone know of anything..

I am also looking for a decent chauffeur company, provide an S Class/Lincoln or something Newark - Manhattan to the hotel, anyone used anyone in particular they can reccomend? Been quoted $88 each way so far best price all in.. that any good? we have a chauffeur company in birmingham and thats good compared to UK rates for luxury car, but still none the wiser really..

Am guessing i may want to get something sorted on the booking front pretty sharpish otherwise the end of the hol won't be very fun with her indoors having a proper strop on for the rest of it.. Neutral

Got helicopter/boat tours all sorted.. cannot wait! Very Happy

Ok been a few times so can give a couple of recos on the restaurant front from both ends of the spectrum......

If you like seafood and want a nice meal in lovely surroundings but without blowing the budget then go for the oyster bar in Grand Central Station (can't get much more central than that) - but this maybe a little low key for Valentines - good for other nites if you still there tho. Great oysters and beer and lovely arched ceilings with little lights all over em (very relaxed)

For a really nice meal try the Blue Fin in Times Square - booking is necessary but you won't be disappointed it's a lovely restaurant and has the sort of feel ideal for Valentines - despite the name it's not just fish. This would be ideal IMHO for the big night. If you do like fish the lobster in unreal but everything is good.

Another place def not to miss is a Peking Duck House if you like Chinese food (236 East 53rd St.). Forget the crispy duck that you've had anywhere in the UK, this is totally different, soft and succulent. The chef will come from the kitchen and slice it off the whole duck at yr table and the waiter will make every pancake for you with spoon and fork Shocked It's very relaxed and very inexpensive - again good for the other nights you might be there rather than Valentines itself.

The street system is grid based so you really can't get too lost in Manhattan at all. Also take her to Tiffany's on 5th Avenue just down from Central Park and let her wander round and take it all in - it's nice to look even if (like us) you're not buying.

Hit the Coffee Shop in Union Square for Mojitos that will smash you to pieces- you can always walk back up Broadway from there which is a relatively easy stroll.

Definitely try and have a stroll thru Chelsea Village - lovely feel to it for just strolling thru.

Wrap up though cos it will be cold cold cold

Enjoy Thumbs Up (let me know if you need more) Have i got the busted controller?!?!!?

3rd Avenue, south of 35th, all great restaurants down that part of Manhattan....

I know a firm who gave us a CLS, would that do?

Tribeca area is the way to go for good food/drinks in a nice ambiance.

One of my favorite restaurants in NY is Locanda Verde.

Skip the limo and touristic helicopter tour and get yourself and the misses a proper helicopter transfer from Newark airport to Manhattan downtown.... SW

Will you are thinking of the old man.. Not me.. I never even have a Tenner in my wallet.. I have a permanent hole in my wallet since I got hitched. Think many people will know how that feels..

These suggestions are all great, thanks very much for your time and effort, gonna check these out online and book one up.. We are staying at Barclay intercontinental.. Just hope that's what it's cracked up to be..

Helicopter transfer sounds interesting.. Got a link for that mate?
Also the cls nick, was that chauffeur driven or self drive, can't be bothered driving over there, want to be driven this time I go on hol.. S class or equivalent would be good, they all seem to be rocking Lincoln town cars or stretch jobbies anyone else got any recommendations to keep us busy and the wife away from the shops and malls spanking my credit card!?

Gonna catch a show at broadway.. Wife wants to watch lion king.. Whatever on that front though..That's her thing..

Hi Kam,

When we went last year I think a standard taxi was 50ish dollars to Manhatten so your price sounds good.

We ate at the Maze (Gorden Ramsay) in the London hotel -absolutely fantastic meal - perfect for a special occasion (It was the wife's birthday). Also Quality meats is good for a steak. A friend who lives in New Jersey recomended Www.delposto.com to me as a good place for a special Italian meal.

Whilst there try a walk on the highline - http://www.thehighline.org/

Also you need to book early if you want to go up the Statue of Liberty, rather than just on the island. And be prepared for a couple of hour wait in the cold/rain as you go through security before getting on the island Sad 2011 Autobiography Santorini Black

Check out "The Comedy Club" ull get someone trying to flog you tickets in time square for $10. I was wary but my Mrs was adamant that we go to a comedy show so i bought them and its one of the best shows we have been to. A little cramped but table service on drinks and its pretty cheap.

only been the once, back in 2001, just dont stay out late at night, for one theres some very dodgy characters about, even in Times square, and two, New york does close at night.
The boat trip round Manhatten is fun, but very windy and cold, so wrap up warm, and never ever go large in Maccys D's, the coke is like a litre of the stuff Shocked 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

Was going to suggest the Rainbow Room which was in the Rockerfeller Centre (65th Floor) but just googled it and found it shut in 2009. Embarassed

forgot about the empire state building, they lie to you Shocked
The ticket sellers will ALWAYS tell you there is a 30 minute wait for the lifts, this is a lie, think more than 2 hours Shocked , your best bet is to go into the ground floor area, and find the end of the line, it does snake about though Laughing
Think Alton towers queuing layout, and you cant go far wrong, then decide if you want to go up or not, and yup, its like that EVERY day 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))
