Also is possible to replace battery, but you need to buy a new key case as you destroy the old one, to open it. Also the battery is PCB mounted so needs a bit of soldering. Fairly easy, did one of mine about 8 month ago. Not because the battery had gone, just did it to tidy the key, but replaced battery at the same time.

Shepp, the above is from the 2010 manual, so I would say X5, can just swap in a new battery, no need to destroy the case ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

pre 2010 --> key should recharge while in ignition... replacement of the rechargable battery through dealer I assume...

No personal experience, but a quick search on here, suggests that on the older key fobs, yes, you do have to remove and then re-solder a new battery in to the PCB. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i
