United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Zermatt Silver
Black oil

Had a service on my RRS 3.6TDV8 yesterday. Checked the oil after the 15 mile drive back from the dealership and it was black - just like before it went in for the service. Obvious thought is that the oil hasn't been changed, but before I rip into the dealership, I thought I'd better ask on here if this is normal Exclamation

Thanks in anticipation. 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. Gone: TDV8 HSE; Zermatt silver/ebony, 19" off road alloys, active diff, particle filter, tow pack (it was fun) BMW 730D SE (great car, sadly missed). Ford Focus RS mk2, Ultimate green, lux pack 2, bluetooth. The start of my mid-life crisis.
IN THE GARAGE: BMW i8 - the mid-life crisis continues and it's great fun.

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Zermatt Silver

Since my original post I've spoken to another dealer and a guy I know who runs an independent 4x4 garage. They both say it's likely that the oil has been changed; apparently the new oil can become discoloured almost immediately. Certainly never noticed this with previous BMW diesels, but I do recall a similar situation years ago when I had a Grand Cherokee Jeep diesel. 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. Eh!!!! My TDV6 oil stays clean for around 1000 miles after an oil change, did they drain it out from the sump plug, or do a time / labour saving suction bodge up job from the top? (ie, half an oil change) Shocked RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i

I left my RRS draining overnight on a ram to get all the residue out 1100 miles later still clear. Garages dont have time to do a proper oil changes, I've convinced myself DIY is the way forward Thumbs Up

I've done quite a bit more research on this, including speaking to another friend, who is a qualified diesel engine mechanic, and I accept it is possible for the oil to go black almost immediately, especially if the old oil has not been 100% drained - which garages won't have the time to do. I also spoke to the dealer, who was very understanding; he said they'd had this query a few times and the black oil is quite normal. He offered to change the oil again at no cost if I wanted, although he said they had changed it for sure. I actually believe him, so can't be ar*ed to take it back in. 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist.
