OBD II code P0172

My SSC has 39,000 miles; over the last week I have been getting an amber engine light: code is P0172 (overly rich right bank). Problem is caused by computer enriching fuel due to perceived lean. Have been advised that there is a Technical Bulletin (PTB00231 for this issue); anybody have/seen? I have checked all vacuum lines, tightened the SC bolts; cleaned the the MAP sensor; used AMSOIL injector cleaner. After resetting the code; code is off for a day, then pops back on.

Thoughts? Thanks.javascript:emoticon('Confused') 08 RRSSC zematt Silver current

No, just cleaned it. If I need to, I will get the dealer to do it under warranty. I hate going there: they tend to sit on it. 08 RRSSC zematt Silver current

Malaysia 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Chawton White

Not seen that Bulletin, sorry.

P017200 -

* Restricted air filter
* High fuel pressure
* Leaking fuel injector(s)
* Oil contaminated with fuel
(too many cold starts with vehicle subsequently not
getting hot enough for long enough)
* MAF sensor fault
* Evaporative emission system fault

You should :

* Check the intake air system for restrictions, etc.
* Check the fuel system for leaks, DTCs, etc.
* Check the oil condition.
* Check for MAF sensor and evaporative emission DTCs. Malaysia Boleh!

Did most of those fixes yu suggested. Still, P0172 keeps returning.

Looks like it might require reconfiguration of engine and transmission control module software. LTB00231 was posted by Umbertobob on rangerovers.net some time back. Finally found it.

Alas, to the dealer. 08 RRSSC zematt Silver current

You cant clean the MAF (note NOT the MAP) the MAF is the mass air flow meeter on the clean air side of the air box.

It really can be instrumental in how the car is fueled and usually prone to some form of error/issue Mike

MAF's are quite frequently messed up by the oil on certain types of performance air filters, the oil sticks to the wire element as it passes and effects the output signal. 08 2.7 RRS "S"

P0172

To quote my Brit friends: "Right!" Actually the Mass Air Flow Sensor can be cleaned rather readily on the both the 4.4 and 4.2 engines: it sits on the clean side of the air filter: you disconnect the the air tube from the air filter housing, unhitch (that is a techy term!) the connector; the mid tube is then removed; and the MAF sensor is a fine wire filament that can be cleaned with any variety of commercial MAF sensor cleaners; electronic cleaners work well, as well. I have always cleaned these about every four thousand miles on all three of the LR3 (Disco3) I have owned. In the LR3s, I was running KN air filters and they have a history (noted above) of gumming up (another techy term) the sensor. Usually use a injector cleaner (AMSOIL was my choice, but they have changed the blend and it is now much weaker) at the same time.

Reviewing the Tech Bulletin, appears when all else seems normal (crate runs like a J79 in burner! and idles very smoothly), probably need to reprogram both the engine and tranny control module software (when all else fails, call Todd at Phillips Land Rover).

Appreciate the great responses and I hope you don't mind my Yank humor. 08 RRSSC zematt Silver current

my experience says you cant clean the maf if its faulty - its faulty...them getting gunged up (as mentioned) is a more visible thing, but they break easily enough on their own!

Plus they are more sensitive than the MAP sensor Mike

I agree. Still, I would think you would get a 0101 if the filament breaks. 08 RRSSC zematt Silver current

As a final and followup: added Lucas Fuel treatment to 20 gal of gas; zeroed out the code; problem(knock wood) seems fixed. Ten drives, no engine warning light.
