Jonny, Just done the same as you.

P/X'd my FL2 HSE/HST in against a RRS about 8 weeks ago now.

You'll love the RRS, but you'll find the switchgear a bit naff compared to the FL2 (and the sat nav).

I budgeted about the same as you, but I ended up spending £25k to get the right car in the right condition.
For about £20k you'll visit a lot of cars in very cr@ppy condition, make sure you get people to try and be honest over the phone, before you commit to travelling.

Good luck.

Andy

Thanks Andy

It's for the wife (honest !) so not sure I can go up to £25k.

How important is full LR history and is the 4.2 a much nicer drive than the TD ? Drove a TD yesterday and it was similarish performance to the FL 2, but hoping the V8 will be a notch or two above in terms of smiles per mile Smile

Cheers

Jonny

I must admit I've not driven the petrol RRS, as this is my daily driver and I prefer the economy.

LR history is important, but don't be put off if it's been a specialist, as thats just as good as main dealer (sometimes better Wink.
Just keep an eye out if it's been to lots of different (small) garages for services.

Also, make a note of the chassis number, then call your local LR dealer to make sure it's had all of it's safety recalls.

HTH

Andy

The 4.2 does have the grin factor, a corking car to drive but you pay a premium at the fuel pump! The 2.7 TDV6 is a nice drive, the acceleration isn't going to set your pants on fire but it is better on fuel. TDV8, is a nice compromise... Pretty quick (though not as quick as the 4.2) and driven sensibly, it'll return a decent economy (but probably out of your price range).

I'm sure someone will comment that you can chip them but I personally keep away from things like that.

Will only be doing about 5k per annum so not too worried about fuel. Thanks for the responses so far, all very helpful !

Which model is considered the most desirable and therefore re-sellable further down the line ?

Cheers all

Jonny

IMHO - TDV8

However, in your position, I'd probably go for a higher mileage, early 4.2 on the basis that it has already had the arse kicked out of its value. As long as it has been looked after, I think the higher mileage ones are slightly better as the engine is just about run in... Wink

If you want to make it that little bit more desirable, I think the Vesuvius Orange ones will be a little more desirable in a few years.

Thanks Camel - try telling that to the missus ! Grey or silver are her choice with Java as a 3rd option. I take it all the DR/suspension issues would be sorted with the 4.2 SC's by now ? Just spent an hour reading through the technical stickies which made slightly sobering reading !

At last we now have a 4.SC in the fold Very Happy

March 2006 (just before the tax went up), 1 lady owner, 60,000 miles, 60,000 mile service just done, new tyres approx 500 miles ago (Kumho Ecsta all round), fridge, driving/fog light upgrade, black with perforated ivory, hand washed every week for the last 5 years by the same chap, full documented LR history with all bills, 20" wheels, Tracker, sunroof, radar distance control and a top top car all round !

I think it's been detailed as well, as the paintwork has virtually no swirls or scratches.

Piccies will be a while as we're moving house and that's taking precedence over playing with the car Big Cry

Cheers

CJ
