Potentially new to RRS

Hi All,

Totally new here and I was hoping for some advice on the RRS and thought this might be a good place to ask!! I have never owned a 4x4 before but have always had large powerful cars.

I seem to be drawn to the RRS at the moment and have been looking at the Diesel versions.

I have noticed that for obvious reasons the Supercharged version are really well priced and again for some reason my brain is telling me that is the way to go................ My current car has the same engine (I have a Jag STR) and I love it, love the power delivery and the sound is just superb!! I know in my heart it is a bad idea but cant seem to shake the idea that if I go down the Diesel route it would just make me sad@

Just how bad on petrol are the supercharged versions? (I think I know the answer to this one!) and are they a real option considering how much fuel costs these day? Would I just get sick of spending my life at the petrol station??

So the same question I guess for the Diesel versions, what is the real life fuel consumption like on these and what are they life to live with?

I am also hoping for some real experiences of the RRS, what are they like to live with, what should I be looking for, are there specific years I should avoid etc etc.

Would probably be looking at a 05/06 model

Any advice greatly appreciated and I look forward to picking all your brains in the future Wink

Cheers!

Hi Zanderman,

I got my RRS 5 weeks ago. I too had spent my life in quick cars, all petrol driven!

But, and it's a big but, I love my RRS probably more than any of the others I've had. It's a totally different driving experience (cue the sniggers from some regulars about that, cynics all!), you just drift along the road, sitting in an armchair!

OK, I'ver never filled a tank before that cost 100 quid, but if petrol had been around the same price 8 years ago, the Maserati would have come close.

I've been taking averages over the last few weeks and on general running around, driving to work, and my missus having a go and clogging the throttle, I'm getting the average of 26.7 mpg. Now, I can live with that. My M5 did 13!!!!!!!

Don't worry about the response from the diesel engine, it's good, a bit slow on the kick down, but you get used to it.

Go on, take the plunge, but be careful, there is a lot of crap out there, over priced crap at that! I took nearly a year to find mine, full service history a must, and you can tell by the leather if it's been well looked after, no dings and clean paintwork and metals.

Best of luck.

Hi Zanderman - welcome to the forum it's a great place to be Thumbs Up

I may be able to help here! I to have a Jag a XKR 4.2 Supercharged having always wanted one I loved it to bits! But a bit like you I was getting drawn towards the RRs. I don't know why but a uncontrollable urge to get one!

I drove a TDV6 and loved it but after getting out of the Jag I just knew that I couldn't take that bigger drop in power so I then drove a TDV8 and was impressed! But still that power niggle! After a long search I found a 55 plate 4.2 supercharged low mileage FMDSH (a must with these beasts!) with most of the toys. After driving it I was smitten, safe in the knowledge I was as close as I ever could be to the grunt of my XKR! I took delivery in December last year! I didn't sell the jag just in case!!! But it's up for sale now. I drove it a few weeks ago for the 1st time since I got the RRs and although it's got a bit more power than my Range hell it's not half the car the RRs is. We've just been to Cornwall in the Range I drove over a 1000 miles in a week and I loved every mile. You just wouldn't believe the power and road holding of such a big car it's amazing! There’s no going back for me I'm looking at the new models 5ltr of course! The only down side is the 11.5MPG around town and the 18MPG on a run but if fuel is a problem then don't even go there! I use Shell V-Power at about £1.32ish a litre last time I bothered to look and I regularly put over a £100 a time in the tank. If I'm driving around town with a few short bursts of power I'll get around 200/220 miles from a full tank. I did drive from Cornwall to Essex on one tank full about 335miles door to door driving fairly enthusiastically! I’d say ‘go for it’ and if petrol costs aren’t going to be an issue for you get the supercharged!!

Hope that helps and good luck! Cheers Laurence.

England 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HST Java Black

My 3.6 TDV8 averages 20.3 mpg around town, It may not be as quick as the Supercharged but its plenty quick off the mark and will leave a lot of cars standing, it handles brilliantly for such a large car, the engine sounds awesome and doesn't sound like a diesel. Had the car over 4 months now and still enjoy driving it, I was thinking to myself the other day if I were to change for another vehicle what would I buy? and I couldn't think of anything else I would rather have that will get you and your familly around in comfort. BLACK RRS HST 3.6 MY08

Some great advice here guys, thanks for taking the time to respond!

Cant decide if the thing with the petrol is a show stopper or not to be honest. I can afford to run one but just not sure if it would wear thin being at the pump every other day!

My current car is averaging 18 - 20 or so mpg so I get about 260 miles on a full tank (that costs £85 to fill). I can just about manage with that, sounds like the RRS supercharged version is in the same sort of ball park so might be do able.

I did think about getting the Mrs something super economical that I could use if I have any longer customer visits or in to the office etc (where i can claim mileage). That way I could keep the RRS for shorter runs and messing about etc.

Sounds like the perfect plan Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
