in snow it's simple: the narrower the better, believe me I am based in Switzerland - but if you go the 255 route you need 19" wheels SOMETIMES YOU'RE THE BUG AND SOMETIMES YOU'RE THE WINDSHIELD

I've just bought some used 19 inch standard alloys off eBay (with shot tyres) and have a full set of new Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes (255/50/19) to fit for winter. Tyres were £155 each (tyremen.co.uk), the alloys £190 for the set. Not the worst of deals, maybe not the best, but I should get a good couple of winters out of the tyres, and safety levels/confidence has gone up. Slimmer tyres don't surf on water/snow/slush like wide tyres do. It's all a no brainer in my book |

I had Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtremes fitted just over a week ago. I went for 255/55 x 19. Since I had them put on, we've been having a heatwave, so I can't really comment on how they perform in bad weather but the ride is slightly better, extra tyre noise is minimal and they look the business The only downside is a slight lack of tautness in the handling on dry roads; the turn-in isn't as crisp as on the 255/50 Pirelli Zeros - you can definitely feel more sidewall flex. But I think that's a fair trade off for what I understand is outstanding grip in winter conditions. Bring on the snow 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. Gone: TDV8 HSE; Zermatt silver/ebony, 19" off road alloys, active diff, particle filter, tow pack (it was fun) BMW 730D SE (great car, sadly missed). Ford Focus RS mk2, Ultimate green, lux pack 2, bluetooth. The start of my mid-life crisis.
