Interesting seeing your previous cars, as I had 4 BMWs prior to my current RRS which I took delivery of on 12 July, so it's all very new to me. I wanted to stay with BMW and test drove an X5 but couldn't live with the hard ride; the interior also seemed a bit cheap & tacky compared with my 7 Series.

You are comparing a 1.8tonne slippery thing with a 2.7 tonne brick - do you really expect to have better consumption in the RRS than the 730? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it 2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced 2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW |

Easy tiger - I didn't say I expected it to be better; just surprised how much worse it is. Low to mid 30s to the gallon was easily achievable in the BMW (high 30s on a long motorway run), but in the RRS I'm lucky to see 25 - and I haven't really let it breath yet. Maybe it will imporove slightly when the engine loosens up. 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. Gone: TDV8 HSE; Zermatt silver/ebony, 19" off road alloys, active diff, particle filter, tow pack (it was fun) BMW 730D SE (great car, sadly missed). Ford Focus RS mk2, Ultimate green, lux pack 2, bluetooth. The start of my mid-life crisis. IN THE GARAGE: BMW i8 - the mid-life crisis continues and it's great fun. |

I know I get accused of driving like an old person (I am compared to most on here!) but I get 28mpg in fast local A road driving in my TDV8 and 31+ on a long (300 miles+) drive on the motorways. I don't always drive like a snail but I tend not to use the kickdown and leave it in cruise at 72mph on the speedo for long drives. I leave the aircon/ climate set at 20 all year round and also run the fridge most of the time BUT I don't do much driving in town in it and only use Sport mode when I need it for overtaking. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

You may not be as old as me - I have, as they say, been around the block a few times. Anyway, I must admit I do tend to push on a bit but not as yet in the RRS as it has only done 1100 miles. If I end up getting the sort of figures you're quoting I'll be happy though. 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. And maybe it wouldn't seem so bad if the tank was a bit bigger. I'm getting less than 400 miles from a tank, compared with nearer to 600 in the BM. It feels like I'm having to fill up every 5 minutes! Sure I'll get used to it though - it's still early days. In most other respects I've very pleased with it. 14.5MY SDV6 HSE Dynamic Indus silver/lunar/ebony 20" wheels, InControl, full-size spare, electric tow bar, adaptive xenons, adaptive cruise control, auto main beam assist. Was averaging 18.9mpg on tank to tank fill ups ( the only really accurate way to measure mpg). Got that up to 21mpg with the "chip" fitted. Fairly typical mixed driving conditions..I've said it before,I'm not a plod but at the same time I ain't trying to be a Jenson Button either. I appreciate the car is bit on the hefty side but would still liked to have seen the figures averaging nearer the 30mpg mark |

I must be doing something wrong then because I can get from Stirling to Lymington in the New Forest and arrive with the fuel gauge needle just below the quarter tank mark, which is enough then to get me almost into London, I usually chicken out before then and fill up at Fleet Services or in the New Forest. Won't be getting that good a consumption after next Wednesday though but I'll have a bigger tank instead!
