Car Polishing

I've purchased one of those industril buffers that looks like a sanding machine basically.

Theres no instructions in regards to using the machine.

I've got a 2 round sponges and one fury swirl add on piece, and I dont know which I would use to apply the polish to the car and what piece to buffer off with.

I can see very fine scratches on the car's body and certain area's on the bonnet which I need to buffer out.

Can anyone help?

it sounds like the FURY one is a wool one, these can, in the wrong hands, cause lots of swirls etc

it also hard to say on the foam ones, as you get a multitude of foam pads also i.e ultra finishing, finishing, polishing, light cut, heavy cut etc etc

What make is the machine, and is it a rotary or a dual action one?

Any identifying brand or numbers on the foam pads?

Cheers Pal.

I've got the rotary machine, I havn't got details of the machine or the pads to hand as i'm at work.

I've read the thread and its helped to advise how to use the rotary machine to buffer and spread but I still dont know what pad is used for what, a bit odd for the machine not to have come with instructions, it was purchased from ebay brand new!

You should start off with the pad than will provide the least correction, with the least agressive polish

so something like a finish pad, then if the correction isn't coming along, up the polish to a more aggresive one, uping the pad if needs be

I would forget the wool one, for now, its not easy to tell be a finishing pad will normally be softer than say a cutting pad, so you might be able to work out the difference

to be honest it depends on what level of polishing your after, wether your looking at correcting the cars swirls or using less elbow grease

when i used my Dual Action i found a light cut and Gloss it One step Machine polish gave good results, I also got good results using a a polishing pad and Auto Glym Super resin as this fills the swirls

NickM has been on a tuition day, with a rotary so he will be better to give advice on its use, as i use a DA myself, saying that the pads used are similar

I hope i have been some help, bit hard when im not sure what you have actually got in the box etc Very Happy

I've been using the pad with the Super Resin Autoglym product but what i've found is the polish drys up too quick when I apply it to the car and I end up using far too much polish, then i'm using the wool fury pad to buffer off the polish.

My main aim is to get rid of very light scratches on the bonnet and also the swirls on the bonnet and to be hoest with the way i've used the pads it hasn't made any different apart from making the vehichle more shiny but not getting rid of any scratches or swirls.

you should use the foam pads to apply and work the polish then a microfibre cloth to wipe off, you could be inflicting more swirls in using the wool pad

With super resin polish it has just a little cutting power, but is loaded with fillers that mask the swirls, the wool pad is most likely removing these fillers

Don't get me wrong, AG SRP is a great product, but to remove swirls you need to go for other polishes with more cutting power.

There are plenty of detailers out there that can offer tuition course, showing pad and polishes combination and how to use these to provide a good quality finish

It maybe worth looking at these, for the small outlay it would cost, as i'm worried you maybe inflicting more damage than your correcting, especially using a rotary (i hope you take that in the manner i am saying it, and take no offence Thumbs Up )

i agree, I assumed pad to apply polish and wool to buffer off obviously not the case and difficult to know unless you have guided instructions.

I will go and see a local garage that specialises in that sector to find out how much they would charge to polish and to give advise on how to polish correctly using the correct appliances.

As mentioned previously is it easy to remove the lettering on the bonnet, and would the adhesive left be easy to remove?

i've never removed badges, so i could say for sure, but I presume something like a automotive glue/tar remover would remove any glue residue

Harry - I have heard people say on hear about using fine fishing line or similar to get behind the lettering and cut through glue, not done it before but sounds feasable, and yes i would have thought tar remover would remove the remaining glue Thumbs Up

How did you get on Harry?

As above with what npinks says, you have to be very careful with the rotary machine as it can cause some nasty damage if used in the wrong hands or with the wrong product/pad combinations.

Take this 355 spider for instance:

Super Resin Polish isn't great for rotary use; the heat build-up as you found out would dry the polish out too quickly and clump everywhere. What speeds were you running the machine at? DA (dual-action) is much better suited for SRP.

I recently compelted a black Disco 3 myself and also stripped the leading badge off to machine the bonnet in its entirety. This thread may be of interest to you: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/forum/viewto...ht=#100442

Keep us informed with how you get on?! Smile

Jim

Hi Harry,

You can remove the badges by using a hair dryer and clear fishing line. Hold the hair dryer on each letter/emblem and put the fishing line over top of each so it hangs down on each side. Slowly pull down as the dryer heats them up and they come right off. Not sure why you want to remove them but that is how they come off.
Did you purchase a buffer or orbital?? Buffer is strictly circular and orbital is..well orbital. Use only foam pads, wool takes off to much clear coat. RR puts a lot of clear coat on their finishes but you still have to be carefull.
I just did this to mine as I had a dog jump up on 3 doors scratching all but not thru clear. I used Meguiars Diamond Cut 2.0 with a foam pad. Foam will not burn thru clear unless you really push down HARD. Go over it until swirls are gone then use another clean foam pad to apply wax. Good luck!! Mike mike murphy
