aux ipod cable

My dealer gave me an ipod cable that plugs into AUX and has the ipod connection as well as usb connection. I've managed to plug both iphone and ipod nano in and play through the speaker system. However, I can't seem to be able to control shuffling through tracks via any steering or dash controls - only the iphone/ipod itself. Also, I cant tell if the battery gets charged via the connection either. Are these limitations of this cable/system or is there a way to get all this using this cable?
