No more damaged wheels???

Don't know if anybody spotted an article in this weeks 'Auto Express', but a company has brought out a protector for wheels that apparently stop damage from kerbing...........which with RRS wheels is a continual problem.

Obviously, I don't have a clue if it works, but they say you don't need to re-balance the wheels, which is good news'Very Happy'

Have a look at:-

http://www.alloygator.com .

There is absolutely no substitute for a genuine lack of preparation.

I think there's a couple of these on the market now. Good idea, but no clue how well they work...

I might take a look - I have my wheels refurbed every 2 months or so, no matter how careful I am, still happens. Worse in London i think as more kerbs etc - not the case when up in Manchester and Chester etc....more open driving.....will take a look later and see if worth considering...

Looks like a good idea but I wonder how they stand up to wheel cleaning chemicals such as wonder wheels etc. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Sounds like a great idea, just two things..

1) not sure it would work on higher curbs, as the curb would make contact with the convex alloy spoke.

2) it fits between the tire and rim, the air seal, which would make me nervous, especially at the join if you didn't cut it 100% straight and 100% the right length. I think this could be a weakness and potential blow out weakness?

Of course, I have not tested and this is only my option, but I wonder if any 'approved' testing has been carried out.

I hope I'm wrong and they do exactly as they say, with all the best intentions and care, we all catch the odd curb and curse Censored

Hi, hope you dont mind me replying to your post. I work for AlloyGator and thought it would be good to answer your questions.

1 - With wheels with Convex spokes you could still damage the wheel in some cases, however the chances of damaging will be reduced.

2 - The part of the tyre that seals onto the rim is well below the point where the AlloyGator fits. The inner bead on a tyre is the sealing point, not the point at which it meets the wheel rim. This means that there is no danger of air pressure loss, even at the join. They have been rigorously tested over a 3 year period and we have tried lots of different materials to ensure we have a quality product. To date we have not suffered any air-loss.

3 - The material has been tested with all known wheel cleaning prodcuts of a reputable nature. ie Wonder Wheels etc. etc. Is is fine with these in our experience, however some of the hand car-wash places, do use what can only be desribed as "acid" on your wheels. This is purely down to speed so that they can get you in and out quickly of the car-wash. This strips the lacquer from your wheels and over a period of time will degrade the walls of your tyres. This can take some of the colouring from the AlloyGators but to be honest i would be more concerned what other damage it is doing to other components in your car. If you get them to use standard "TFR - Traffic Film Remover" that they spray over the car it should be fine.

Hope this answers your questions . cheers Curt

Curt,

Is there any chance of these dislocating when cornering hard at speed?

Hi Gary, We have tested these vigousouly both on road and tracks (Bruntingthorpe) to date they have remained in place during driving. If they are fitted correctly I cannot see that they would dislocate at any point. We have barbs on the Gators that grip into the tyre to prevent any movment. I'm not saying that it couldnt happen by some remote chance, its just not happened to date with all the testing we have been doing over the years. Hope this answers your question. It would be good to here from some RR owners close to the Birmingham, Redditch area that would like to have a set fitted for trial. Cheers Curt Smile

Excellent news, the set I ordered on Friday are on my desk, unfortunately, much as though I would prefer Alloy Gator to fit them and photograph the process for this site, I'm 120 miles away from B'rum.

Will try and find a tyre fitter that can sort it all out for me!

Photo's to follow.......eventually! .
