Spare wheel winch

I recently needed to remove the spare wheel. In order to be able to drive I have pulled the spare wheel winch up.
Today I wanted to load the spare wheel back on how ever I have experienced problems with the winch.
Firstly it went down VERY difficult and then when I loaded the wheel it did not pull it up. I played with the damn thing for half an hour but the only thing that I have achieved that the winch does not move the cord either way Banging Head
Provisionally I have fixed the cord to the chassis so that I can drive but would like to get this fixed sooner rather then later.
Any one has experienced something similar? Advise would be highly appreciated Thumbs Up

Yes this is a problem - the cable has knotted itself. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

I would think you have to put the car up on a ramp and then attach a weight to the wire to pull the kinks out while winding down the winch - it happens to all lifting wires if you don't keep some weight on them when you wind them back onto the winch. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I had this before - replaced under warranty but claim was something like you should not wind up without load on - Censored design fault ......

Now booked in for a new winch.

As soon as I started saying the words "winch and spare wheel" the response from the technician was "I will order one for you" Laughing

Had the same problem.
Got it fixed at the local tyre shop.
One guy turning the winch, the othe guy under the car, pulling and guiding the cable.
All this with some WD 40. All by all a 5 minutes job. SW

Sometimes it is not enough to do our best;
sometimes we must do what is required.
