US spec. rear lights

Did anyone try to modify the standard UK MY09 rear lights to the US style? Is it possible at all? If so, any idea how?

Since no one seems to get caught by this topic a question to one of you �electricians�.
Do you think it is possible just to connect a holder for a W5W bulb on to the wiring for the rear light and so activate the rear side light?
Or am I talking total rubbish?

FYI, the side marker bulbs are 3 watts on NAS spec cars. Don't know if the bayonet mount is there - unused - on assemblies outside of North America.

Did a bit of digging & a search turned up a few threads.
