Time to get the salt and dirt off - Foam Lance style....

Just got one....

Works really well as you can see....

Manufacturers say :-

"What is a foam lance? Why are they useful? At the simplest level, a foam lance is any device that attaches to a pressure washer and mixes a shampoo-based product with the flow of water to produce thick clinging foam. Most pressure washer manufacturers produce a foam lance attachment for their units, but some do not work very well. Karcher, for example, is one such popular manufacturer that makes excellent domestic pressure washers, but their foam lance attachment doesn't produce very thick foam, which limits its effectiveness. Thus, many enthusiasts have looked to aftermarket suppliers for alternative lances, and of these latter products, the best currently on the market is the HD Foam Lance, offered here with a choice of fitments for most popular pressure washer types.

The idea behind applying thick clinging foam to the car before washing is simple and the benefits are obvious. If you apply a generous coating of suds to dirty surfaces and allow them to cling in situ for many minutes at a time, the emulsifiers and surfactants have longer to work and therefore dissolve and suspend a lot more dirt and grime. By the time the foam is eventually rinsed off, much of the dirt and grime is simply washed away, leaving relatively clean surfaces behind ready for a two bucket wash by hand. Clearly, the major benefit here is that the bulk of dirt removal is done before a wash mitt is placed on the car, which greatly reduces the risk of inflicting fine scratches and marring during the subsequent hand-washing process."

Works pretty well. Not as good as a using mitt or sponge afterward, but an awesome first pass. The car had hundreds of miles in salt... Thumbs Up 2022 P440e AB

I read using hot water works better when mixing the solution for the attached bottle Thumbs Up

Nick - hot water works best because you can dissolve more salts into it than cold water, also hot water softens tar deposits giving the detergent a better chance of removing them.
When I hand wash my cars the program usually runs
a) Cold water wash with no brush to get the really heavy bits off
b) Cold wash with a car wash brush
c) Hand wash with very soft sponge and quality car wash soap like Magauires or Turtle wax Zip wax in hotest water I can stand
d)Cold water rinse off using a garden hose

I might give that power lance thing a try -then it can join all the other useful aids that I cannot be bothered to use a second time and are lying in a big box at the back of the garage!

One thing to use with huge care is a Karcher type pressure washer with a turbo lance - they are powerful enough to remove paint and definitely remove underbody sealer. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Personally i give the car

1) low pressure washer with cold water (High pressure wheels)
2) Snowfoam solution, made up with hot water
2a) Clean wheels whilst snowfoam is working
3) High Pressure wash at held 45deg (so it doesn't force dirt into the paint)
4) Hand wash 2 buckets method warm water with quality shampoo/wax, and noodle mitten
5) open hose rinse, to sheet off the water
6) dry with waffle weave microfibre towels
7) top up with spray on wax and polish to a shine

I would use a tar remover on the lower panels if they apprear to need it to spotted in between stages 3 & 4

Then on to the wifes car, do do the same Sad

I have always been told that you do not use hot water to get salt off as it makes the salt action on the car more aggressive. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

I haven't heard that before, but by the time, i get to the hand wash there would be any salt on the car

The hot water in the foam lance is meant to make a better foam, but since in most cases it been pushed out via a pressure washer using coldwater, the foam would be cold by the time it reaches the car.

With the foam lance, have a look at getting some snowfoam

there are various brands, this makes it really really foamy and acts like a traffic film remover too, lossening all the dirt on the car

Can't see any bottle of it on Polished bliss, but i am sure they do, i have bought nearly all my car washing stuff from them, and have just been finding out about a new range of polishes they are doing for correcting my cars conifer tree rash from kielder.

I then use a range of shampoos, from meguiars NTX, turtlewax wash 'n' wax and Zymol.

last time i went to one of those places I was in the queue waiting to go in and was watching the lads at work, when he dropped his chamois leather and shook it, then carried on drying the car. Shocked

The time before that, at a different place, they washed the whole car, rinsed, and asked me to drive forward to the drying bay.

I asked them to wash the roof at this point as they hadn't even touched it

I now do my own

Yeah most car wash places are Censored

you have to search out the good ones who are smart enough to realise that if you drop your sponge in grit and pick it up people notice and dont go back.

the one I use has all kinds of exotic cars going through it so think it must be highly thought of in the car washing world

JayMann has a very good IMO washer near him - they have a conveyor machine washer but also do a very good manual wash too for extra. Have had my car washed a couple of times by them when I have been down in those parts.
Up here I now use the local pressure washer centre who have 3 carwash bays, they do a cold low pressure wash followed by a hot wash with soap like in Paul's picture, a hand wash over with a frequently rinsed sponge then a rinse and then sort of a wax spray finish on the body panels. Like JF says it is frequented by the very few exotic cars around these parts so it cannot be bad! Costs £5 for an SUV or an exotic, £2 or £3 for lesser cars 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
