Doubt it's common - what's the mileage on your RRS? Not in warranty?

If an '05 car, it must have just gone out of warranty. Phone/ write to LR customer service explaining that it is unacceptable for a transfer box to fail within such a short period and at low mileage, they may cover it. Get it checked out at another dealer first though.

If you bought from a dealer, there may be a 1 year warranty from date of purchase?

Hope it gets sorted.

LR are very good with out of warranty repairs and will often pay a good % of the bill. The number of LRs previously owned or owned plus the time with the brand helps. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black

My wife's TDV6 RR Sport HSE needs a new transfer box after 47k miles (2007). Anyone else had this problem and if so any idea of part prices etc? Did RR help on the costs? I asked what could have caused the problem and no-one knows but suspects a problem with different size tyre - but they are the same size (2 different brands) and they have seen 3 of this occur in as many months - Discovery and 2 Sports but with much bigger mileage.

Anyone with experience of this issue or pointers on limiting the damage would be much appreciated.

Thanks DRDILL, I drove the car myself and it is absolutely terrible - the rasping noise is louder than the engine now.

When the car was on the ramp we could identify it clearly rasping form the transfer box. I don't think there has been a software update carried out on the car at any stage and it hasn't been chipped or modified in anyway.

Got the transfer box replaced last week (huge bill) and the car is back to new again. I spoke to a few other dealers about reliablility when discussing possible new cars and they all said the same about the RR Sport and potential issues with diff's and transfer boxes.

According to the garage, there was also nothing I could do to prevent it just a pity and an expensive one at that.

How often have you been engaging low range? You should engage it at least monthly (rule of thumb recommendation from a dealer that I used to use) and allow the car to run a very short distance in low just to move all the parts and keep them oily and not allowing them to seize. I have followed that rule as closely as I could whenevr I have owned Land Rovers with low range gear boxes and never had a problem with the transfer. I would bet that 90% or more folks here have never attempted to engage low range.

So tip of the day - regularly engage low range and test it to keep all the moving bits free and lubricated! best way is to get the car offroad sometime so it's a bit of fun giving the transfer box some exercise too - even if it is only a muddy field. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced

Thanks Tim, at this time of year the car is never used in low range. Must try that in future any time I drive it.

I didn't ask for a contribution - I didn't think there would be any chance of one.

I was looking at a couple of TDV8 MY10 at circa 10k miles prices were around £42k so may change. Looked a Stornaway grey and a Bournville.

England

Hi,

It's been a fair while since I was on here last.

My 3½ year old TDV8 has developed a horrible whining noise from somewhere under the car, so I took it in to Guy Salmon in Coventry who diagnosed a fault with the transfer box and that it needed replacing at almost £3,000. Shocked Censored

I was planning on replacing the car last December, but couldn't find a new TDV8, so I ended up keeping teh one I have and as a consequence, I forgot to renew the warranty.

The car has only done 49,000 miles, so I'm rather surprised and annoyed that it now needs a major component replacing. Both Guy Salmon and LR are refusing to contribute or consider a goodwill replacement.

Any suggestions from anyone?

Thanks,
